AMERICAN SCHOOL OF BOMBAY ELEMENTARY PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2011-12 Welcome to the 2011-2012 Physical Education school year! It is a great pleasure to be back at ASB with the students. We are sure that we will have a very positive year. We encourage parents to contact us directly with any comment or concerns. We look forward to spending time with and teaching your children. Philosophy and Standards The American School of Bombay Physical Education Department supports the development of the whole child. We equip students with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to encourage lifelong healthy habits. While we place an emphasis on the physical, we recognize the importance of developing the emotional and social attributes of each child through developmentally appropriate, structured activities. We support the individual needs of each child, while challenging them to achieve their personal best. Being prepared for PE: - Clothing: Ecec students are expected to wear appropriate clothing, intended for physical movement in warm temperatures; for example: sports shorts, light sweatpants, T-shirt are appropriate. KG-5 students are expected to wear the ASB Elementary PE Uniform. The uniform can be purchased with a Smart Card at the School Store. We recommend that students have two uniforms. We expect hair to be tied back and off the face. Watches and jewelry, which may pose a danger, should be removed prior to class.
Every student must also bring a hat and water bottle to each P.E. lesson. This is to prevent extended sun exposure and dehydration when classes are held outdoors. Shoes: clean sport shoes (sneakers) are appropriate. Soccer cleats, dress shoes, platform sneakers, open-toe shoes, crocs, sandals, and shoes with rollers are inappropriate. Swimming: bathing suit (one-piece for girls), towel, shower shoes (flip-flops, sandals), goggles, swim cap for long hair. Sun Screen: Please apply sunscreen daily to your child because they will be outside daily for recess and/or PE. Being excused: Students may be excused from P.E. class by bringing a note from their parents. To be excused for longer periods of time (1 week or more), a note from the doctor is expected. Any medical concerns or limitations should also be communicated by a note from the parents. If a student gets hurt or sick during school the same day, a note from the nurse may excuse this student from taking part in that day’s P.E. lesson. A telephone call from home or an email is also acceptable. Physical Education Units in Elementary School A wide variety of skills are covered in the Elementary Physical Education program: Spatial Awareness, Creative Movement, Concept exploration, Fitness, Tumbling, Ball Manipulatives such as striking, dribbling, throwing, catching, and ARC Swimming.
