Homework

3rd Grade Homework Responsibilities

Daily assignments will be written on the board.  The third graders will be responsible for writing each assignment in their assignment notebook during study hall each day.  When they finish each assignment, they should check it off.  Then at the end of the day, they can easily tell which assignments are not finished and should be taken home for homework.  I will initial their assigment notebooks each day, and I ask that parents also sign it each night, verifying that they were aware of their student's homework.

All students will have a yellow homework folder which will go home each night, and must be returned the next school day.  All homework will be placed in this folder, along with any notes. Homework should not take longer than 30-45 minutes each night. If your student is consistently spending more than 30-45 minutes each night on homework, please contact me.  Late assignments will lose points and privileges.

Daily homework in 3rd grade will consist of:

  • Everyday Math Homelink
  • Any assignments not completed during normal school day work time (including reading, grammar, spelling, mathboxes, social studies/science)
  • At least 5 minutes of math fact review - at the beginning of the year this includes addition/subtraction; later in the year this will also include multiplication/division
  • At least 20 minutes of pleasure reading

In addition, other possible homework will include:

  • Studying for unit tests in social studies and science
  • Occasional at-home projects
  • Book Reports:  Third graders are required to read a minimum of 400 pages each quarter.  Students should be reading chapter books which contain at least 50 pages, and completing a report on each book.  This year I am letting students choose the type of book report they would like to complete, including:  written, 1-2 min. oral, book commercial or book project. Each student must complete at least one of each type of report at some point during the school year.  In addition, students will be recording the genres of books they are reading.  I am also asking students to read at least 1 book from each genre at some point during the school year, including realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, traditional literature, informational, and biography.  Our written book report is available to students at school, and will also be available under the Forms section on this website.  Rewards will be given at the end of each quarter for students meeting their goal.  In addition, each month students will be assigned a book report project.
