Social/Emotional:

  • Can verbalize wants and needs
  • Recognizes authority figures
  • Can make simple choices
  • Shares and takes turns
  • Respects the property of others
  • Can work/play cooperatively with peers

Language Arts/Literacy:

  • Identify uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet (out of sequence)
  • Recognize and write all of the letters of the alphabet in upper and lowercase forms
  • Write first name and last name using upper and lowercase letters
  • Use scissors, glue, paint, and other art materials with relative ease
  • Identify letter sounds (beginning/ending)
  • Use initial consonant sounds and sound patterns to read words (for example, f + an = fan; r + an = ran)
  • Identify several sight words (the, that, said, is...)
  • Recognize and use rhyming words
  • Listen to a story without interrupting
  • Put events of a story in order (first, next, last)
  • Retell a story including details
  • Write simple sentences using sight words, phonics skills, and inventive spelling

    Fine Motor Skills:

    • Grip a pencil, crayon, or marker correctly (with the thumb and forefinger supporting the tip)
    • Color within the lines
    • Cut on straight/curved lines

    Math Skills:

    • Classify objects according to their size, shape, and quantity
    • Sort and classify objects using one or more attributes
    • Recognize and write numbers to 20
    • Match numbers to their sets
    • Recognize shapes and patterns 
    • Recite the days of the week and months of the year
    • Name ordinal numbers first through fifth
    • Use graphs to gather information
    • Understand spatial relationships (top/bottom, near/far, before/behind) 

    Math by the end of Kindergarten...

    • Add and subtract using manipulatives (Cheerios, candy or other objects that can be picked up)
    • Compare quantities by estimating, weighing, and measuring
    • Tell time to the nearest hour
    • Recognize coins

    Work Habits:

  • Listens attentively
  • Follows directions
  • Acts on instruction and repeats spoken directions
  • Cleans up independently
  • Works independently for short periods of time
  • Makes good use of time
