Biography

Sarah Dewberry

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."--William Butler Yeats

I understand that this is truly a unique school.  As an alumna of St. Francis, I believe that all the success I have enjoyed in my academic and professional life is a direct result of the education I received here.  I am a strong believer in the value of small class sizes, a caring and encouraging environment, hands-on learning, and rich and varied experiences.

I earned a degree in Elementary Education at Centre College in 1995 with an emphasis in Social and Behavioral Studies.  After teaching second, third, and fourth grades in a small public school for two years in Central Kentucky I got married and moved to Northern Kentucky where I taught fifth grade for three years.  While living in Northern Kentucky I earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration from Xavier University where it was my hope to some day move back to Louisville and work at St. Francis.  In the summer of 2000 my husband and I moved to Louisville, and I joined the faculty of St. Francis as a 3/4 lead teacher.  I taught for five years, during two of which I also held the role of Lower School Head.  After my first daughter was born in March of 2005 I decided to take a year off.

The following year I was fortunate enough to be able to return to St. Francis part time, teaching kindergarten two days a week.  After three years of doing that I was given the opportunity to move into student services as a part time school counselor.  This year I am splitting my time between the counselor's office (Tuesdays) and the classroom, teaching fourth grade on Mondays.  It is too much fun being back with the kids that I taught in kindergarten!  This arrangment gives me the chance to use my skills in the classroom and my skills in administration.  It is quite fulfilling, and I am very thankful that I am able to continue to work part time, as it provides me time with my second daughter who is still at home.

In my free time I enjoy practicing yoga, cooking, reading, and sewing.  My family and I love living in Crescent Hill where there is always something to do.  When people ask about my long drive to work, I respond, "I love where I live and I love where I work, so no matter where I'm going I'm always happy to be there."
