We have another full week ahead of us as we forge ahead with our unit on communities. We hope you enjoyed the visual feast we provided in the cafeteriaJ We noted how different our communities appear when you climb the stairs and look down on them; a learning experience in point of view! This week, we begin to draw our attention to one small community within our larger Mumbai community: ASB. We will wonder and wander about the school, thinking about the myriad of people who are a part of this community. We enjoyed a wonderful visit to ASEEMA school last Thursday. A part of our writing this week will be devoted to creating a class big book about our experience and observations.
We introduce Unit 7 in Math this week. Unit 7 is a very fun unit on 3D geometric shapes, attributes, polygons and symmetry. Our work with boxes last week helped our hands and minds get ready for the fun!
During writer’s workshop, we begin the process of selecting, revising, and publishing our pieces for class poetry anthologies. This is a thoughtful process that will take about 2 weeks. We hope to bring you our anthologies right after Spring Break.
We are fortunate to have Beth Swenson, reading consultant, visit ASB next week. She will spend all day Monday with Team One. We will observe her and learn from her as she enjoys interactive read-alouds with each of our classes. We will also spend time with her ‘unpacking’ the Fountas & Pinnell continuum, a central piece of our balanced literacy program at ASB. In the continuum, F & P state: "Interactive read-alouds abound with text talk – shared talk in which students examine ideas and thinking about narrative, expository, or poetic texts. Every engagement gives students opportunities for thinking about texts in new ways. The more they have a chance to do it, the better they get at text talk." Team One looks forward to learning more about this important component of balanced literacy.
We will now keep a written record of those students who leave early – either for sickness or other reasons. If you are picking up one of our students, please come to the ES Office to sign him or her out.
