A dictionary gives the definition and spelling of a word.

A thesaurus gives words with similar meanings to your word (synonyms), as well as words that are opposites (antonyms).

  • Scholastic Word Wizard:  powered by Wordsmyth; site gives quick definitions and has word games

  • Dictionary.com: This site not only contains a dictionary, but a whole bookshelf of reference works as well.

  • Your Dictionary.com:  this is a dictionary/search engine for words and can even search in over 400 different languages

  • Mariam-Webster Online  The Language Center: This site provides access to both the Collegiate Dictionary and Roget's Thesaurus. In addition, visitors may learn about the Word of the Day or play one of the four word games.

  • RhymeZone:  This is a dictionary for finding words that rhyme

  • The Newberry House Online Dictionary:  This dictionary, which allows you to search by word or phrase, is an excellent reference for younger users or for those learning English.

  • Wordsmyth:  The Educational Dictionary - Thesaurus:  The great feature about this site is that there is an option that allows you to find a definition without knowing the exact spelling of a word.

  • How Stuff Works:  This site is loaded with all kinds of information.

  • Encarta Online:  This site has an encyclopedia, a dictionary, and an atlas.

  • Bartleby:  Great site that sends you to the Columbia Encyclopedia online and other name reference site.

  • World Almanac for Kids:  In this online fact book, each subject area is broken down into subtopics for easy navigation, and colorful graphics enhance the information.

  • Infoplease:  An almanac, encyclopedia, and biography reference site

  • The Old Farmer's AlmanacThis site contains features from the print edition which began publication in 1792 such as weather forecasts, weekly wisdoms, and gardening tips.

  • Fact Monster:  this site has a complete reference desk with a dictionary, thesaurus, almanac, encyclopedia, and atlas

  • Ask Jeeves for Kids:  you can get an answer to tons of questions and also all the reference tools mentioned above

  • Kids Know It All:  fun site with games and links for some of the best sites for kids by subject

  • Kidspace @ The Internet Public Library:  a great site filled with links for kids learn about any subject, play games, find search engines, and reference tools

  • Awesome Library for Kids:  this site has links for every subject and some extras

  • The Beehive:  Homework help for all subjects

  • Kids.gov:  All about our government and elections

  • KidsClick!:  Web search for kids by librarians that gives lots of info

  • Yahooligans!:  this is a searchable directory of Internet sites for kids.

These sites have information about the lives of many famous people.

  • Biography Research Links:  This site has an index for famous men and women that takes you to many sites that give you information about that person.

  • Infoplease:  An almanac, encyclopedia, and biography reference site

  • S9 Biographical Dictionary:  Just type in a name and get a list of facts about the person you're looking for

  • Biographies for Kids:  Short biographies of famous people of all walks of life who are known for leadership
