Grade 5 Art We welcome our newest members to the Island Trees Memorial Middle School, the 5th graders! We got right down to business with supplies and expectations and we are now working on projects. Please remember art projects are completed in class and kept here until the spring art show. All art work will be returned to each student in class after the art show. View from the 5th grade Students are defining and using key vocabulary terms like horizontal, vertical, diagonal, parallel and perpendicular. Applying these terms to their drawings, students successfully drew a character from the "worms eye view". The worms eye view gives the viewer a perspective from the ground, looking upward. The result is what some of our smallest students may think while they're looking up at some very tall 8th graders...what giants they are! Take a look at some student work.
Fall Trees Crunch, kick, jump. Mother nature gives us such wonderful views in the fall. Students are creating their own fall trees by making leaves of different sizes, color and textures. Rubbed and sponge painted leaves, bleeding tissue backgrounds and tree trunks painted with cardboard. The result is a mixed media collage mother nature herself would be proud of. Here are some of our 5th graders working on their project, and a few completed one too. Self Portraits Take a look in the mirror for our next project because the subject is you! We studied the human face, the proportions and features and drew ourselves on large white paper as a sloppy copy. Next, we put the drawing on black construction paper and traced our pencil lines in white glue. Now comes the fun part. Lets hold up our wet papers and let the glue run! MESSY!!!! For more fun, we will hold the paper up on one side and let the glue run in a new direction. More MESS!!!! Once dry, we will go over color theory and color in our work with oil pastels. Voila! A stained glass style self portrait that will surly be like none other. Here are some students working on their projects. What artists we have at IT!! I Love N.Y. New York, New York. We LOVE New York...and our Miss Liberty!! Students are excited and fired up about this project. We're looking at photographs of our famous New York City skyline and the State of Liberty and drawing our own landscapes. Student will design their skylines drawing in their foregrounds first, then the middle ground and finally their backgrounds. Students will be introduced to different watercolor techniques to paint in Miss Liberty, the ocean and sky while using different materials to fill in the city background. The combination of materials will give contrast and visual interest to their landscapes. Check out their progress here. African Landscapes Looking at the beautiful African landscapes, we see warm colored skies, umbrella trees and amazing animals. The students are excited as we began this lesson by watching the opening scene from the Lion King movie. The animals are inspiring and when we remind the students that the entire movie was created by artists, they are excited to get down to work. Miss Stange, our student teacher this semester, will show the students how to use watercolors to blend their sunset skies, as well as acetate, permanent markers and african textiles to complete the project. Here are some photos of the students at work. Van Gogh's Irises Vincent Van Gogh was inspiried to paint some of mother natures most beautiful creations and these purple irises are just that! Vincent Van Gogh created this work of art with out a pre-sketch, so we are doing the same. With just a few guide lines in oil pastels, the students are painting and creating. Double dipping in encouraged and expected in this project. No purple paint was supplied, but students are mixing it themselves on the canvas. Check out these artists at work.
