Happy New year!! My name is Judy Tweed and I am the counselor here at Camp Creek Elementary School. I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday break! I would like to send my best wishes for a wonderful 2012 for you and your family. As the only counselor in the building, I have been working with all grade levels to provide classroom guidance on a variety of topics. I also have started meeting with children individually and in a small groups. I sometimes help children resolve problems with friends through conflict mediation. If your child is new to Camp Creek this year and is having trouble making the adjustment, I would be happy to talk with him/her and maybe help him/her get to know other children in his/her class. If your family encounters a difficult situation, (death, divorce, social issues with friends. etc.) I am happy to offer my support and assistance. I can speak with your child and, in some cases, offer suggests for resources for you beyond the ones found in this site. It is just about the time of year that my classroom guidance lessons will focus on personal safety. I will not be using many of the old personal safety lessons I have used for years (and many of you have previewed). The school system has adopted a new program for personal safety called "Child Lures". These new lessons will be presented to K- 4th grade. The fifth grade lesson will have the same video we have used for years, but will also review all of the lures used by adults to trick children. I am currently working on putting together the materials that I will be using to teach these lessons. I will have the materials available for parents to preview before the lessons begin. There are several key concepts we will teach, and in addition to these concepts, at each grade level, we will expose children to different tricks or lures used by adults- like the pet lure. In this situation, the stranger will ask a child to help him find a 'lost pet' or maybe offer to show a child a new little puppy. We hope, with this approach, to prepare children so they will not be tricked if they are ever face this situation in real life. Reminder: preview dates for parents are Jan. 31 - Feb. 6 (If you missed getting here - there will be a possibility of viewing the lessons later in the week - just give me a call) I will start the actual lessons with the kids Feb. 8th. Please feel free to contact me through email, phone or by requesting a conference. I am here at school from 8:00 - 4:00, Monday through Friday and can come in a little before or stay a little after for a conference, if needed. You can contact me by email: judy_tweed@gwinnett.k12.ga.us or by phone: 770)921-1626. If you forget my name, just ask to speak to the counselor!
