How We Organize Ourselves: Rocks, Sand and Silt
This week will be starting our brand-new inquiry into Pebbles, Sand and Silt. This includes studying the different properties of rocks, their many uses in our communities and societies around world. The central idea is, “Rocks and minerals influence societies.” Our investigations will provide experiences that heighten students’ curiosity of rocks as earth materials, natural resources, and their uses. Hello 2nd Grade Families ~ Walking through our classroom this week you will see kiddos hard at work solving addition problems with regrouping, you will hear Christmas carols being sung, you will see partners working together to find the “balance point” of an item, and you will see letter writing to a Jolly old man. This time of year is always festive and a true delight when seen through our children’s eyes!!! Remember to take the time to reflect with your precious ones what Christmas means to your family and talk about ways your family can make Christmas brighter for those around you. Giving back always feels good!

Extended Inquiry

Now that students are familiar with our 2nd grade Extended Inquiry projects, I am hoping we have more student involvement. Please encourage your child to take on a project this month. Students will have an opportunity to work on them over Thanksgiving break. Reminder that these projects are NOT required and is the student’s choice. We will be doing the same projects as last month, focusing on Ancestry. Next month, there will be different project choices. To find out what projects are available, you can visit our website: http://teachersites.schoolworld.com/webpages/JVonSpreckelsen/above.cfm

Students can create their own projects as long as they focus on something we are studying in class. Have them come talk to me and we can create something that really interests them!

Student contracts are due on Friday, November 18th. The projects are not due until November 30th. We will be holding a Fair Share, so that parents can come and see/watch projects. This is scheduled for December 2nd at 2:15. (Time may change depending on the amount of students participating.)
