Welcome to our 2nd Grade Classrooms You can reach us at kdoonan@loomis-usd.k12.ca.us and jgrannes@loomis-usd.k12.ca.us
We are starting our new IB Unit titled “Ancestors: Who We Are?”. Our central idea is, “Discovering & understanding our ancestors, will help us appreciate beliefs and values.” The purpose of the unit is to learn about our ancestors and appreciate the many ways that our ancestors have made a difference in the way we live today. Another purpose is to help students develop a beginning curiosity of history through an approach that is understandable and interesting to children. We will also be focusing on culture. We will ask students to describe their current and past family cultures.
Throughout this unit, students will be indentifying and researching their family history. Students may focus on either side of their family or both. Allow the students’ interest to guide where they take this inquiry. However, if you would rather pick a country/culture that is connected to your family they can research it. We hope this sparks interest and conversations at home.
Students will be asked to indentify their grandparents and beyond if possible, conduct an interview of an ancestor(grandparent, g-grandparent, aunt, uncle), research the meaning of their first, last name, and even nickname, design a family crest and mask for Halloween parade, cook a family/cultural recipe, and create a personal timeline. These activities are a starting point for our unit study and they will be assigned as the unit progresses.
Please start having those beginning conversations with your child, teaching them or helping them find their special interest into their past. Great ways to start these conversations are to look through old scrapbooks or pictures. Students will start designing their Halloween costumes in class and at home. See attached flyer for more info regarding the Halloween Celebration.
We appreciate your support,
LBCS 2nd Grade Teachers Halloween Party – “Celebrate our Ancestry”-Monday October 31st
Our Halloween Party is quickly approaching. The students will be spending some of the day finishing up their family crests and masks. They also have the option to bring in a food dish that is connected to their family or culture to share with the class for lunch. We will begin designing and researching ideas for the family crests in the near future. Please find some time to start conversations about your family’s ancestry. They will be designing a family crest and mask, depicting what is important to them. Research ideas are:
- -colors (country, family)
-name (meaning, surname, changes)
