NEAT, ORGANIZED AND CREATIVE WORK IS A MUST!  You may come up with your own activity, but Mrs. Grannes or Mrs. Doonan must approve it first.

Extended Inquiry (formally Above & Beyond)
We wanted to briefly touch base with some changes we are making to our 2nd grade projects.  First, we have changed the name from “Above & Beyond” to “Extend Inquiry”.  As we’ve been reflecting on the past 2.5 years of projects we decided we wanted to redesign and re-explain what and why we offer these projects for the students.  First, we want students to understand that learning is a life long journey that continues everywhere you go, not just in the classroom. These projects offer students opportunities to take ideas we are exploring in the classroom and extend their learning outside of school. Second, we want to offer students opportunities to share with their classmates their new learnings and discoveries. With that said, we have decided to rename these projects to “Extended Inquiry” because we felt it better explains what is expected from the students.

We also wanted to clarify what these projects should look like at home.  We expect projects to be “kid work” because the process of learning is more important than the end result.  Students need to try and fail and learn to try again.  Parent’s role in these projects is to be a supervisor and help students decide on an appropriate project then facilitate when absolutely necessary.

Presentations will also look a bit different.  Students will share their project informally with their classmates including a time for in depth questions and answers. We will also schedule a time for students to share their projects with parents in a fair type manner.  Students who present will be spread throughout the room while parents and students walk around and view projects, ask questions and watch demonstrations. We want to focus more on content and offer the students the opportunity to discuss and answer questions about projects with others.
