Pre-K News....
We had a picture perfect day at the Catoctin Zoo. Many thanks to the parents for spending the morning with us. The children enjoyed feeding the animals, petting the baby alligator, and feeling the soft chinchilla. You can check out photos of our trip under the class photos section.
We have a busy schedule for the remainder of the year. We are looking forward to field day at the park, family fun night, and our end of the year program and awards ceremony.
The children are really enjoying our Author/Illustrator each week. They made torn paper art like Leo Lionni, painted with watercolors like Beatrix Potter, and made paper collages like Lois Ehlert. We read books by Eric Carle and made some tissue paper art. Eric Carle has written many books about insects: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Lonely Firefly, The Honeybee and the Robber, and The Grouchy Ladybug. The children are buzzing with excitement about our insect study. Our caterpillars formed a chrysalis and we released them in the parking lot. Everyone enjoyed observing the changes taking place in the life cycle of a butterfly. Ask your child to tell you about the insects and other animals in Denise Flemming's books, In the Small, Small Pond and In the Tall, Tall Grass.
We have completed our "Letter of the Week" alphabet study. The children took their alphabet books home that we workied on throughout the year. It is fun to look back and remember the special projects we did each week as we learned the letters. We will continue to review the letters and sounds and practice the correct formation of letters. Please review the letters and sounds from Aa - Zz this summer. Ask your child to be a letter detective and find the letters in print as you travel or shop (store fronts, cereal boxes, etc.) Play different letter games.
*Find the letter your first name begins with and other letters in your name.
*Pick an uppercase letter and find the matching lowercase letter.
*Choose one of the letters and think of words that begin with that letter.
*Say a word and find its beginning letter.
*Name 3 or 4 words and have your child pick out the one that begins like ____.
*Spell your name.
*Trace letters on your child's back and have him/her guess the letter or have your child practice writing the letters on your back and enjoy a mini massage as he/she erases the letters!
Have fun!
