ALGEBRA II SYLLABUS ALGEBRA II SYLLABUS

Welcome to Algebra Two.  I am looking forward to a successful year as well as working with each and every one of you.  It is my desire to instill in you a love of mathematics.  My goal is to develop your ability to think mathematically.  The key to being successful in mathematics is the ability to think and reason.  If you understand the concept, then you can discover the solution to a problem.

It is also my desire to prepare you for future challenges in mathematics.  The Algebra Two program will be student-centered.

For you to be successful in Algebra Two it is important that you follow class regulations.  Classroom rules and procedures are made to make the learning process move smoothly.  It will be beneficial to you as well as your class peers to follow the following:

CLASSROOM REGULATIONS AND PROCEDURES

A.   Arrive at the classroom on time.

B.   Be prepared for class when the bell rings.

a.     Pencils sharpened

b.    Notebooks on your desk.

c.     Seated at your desk.

C.   Complete assignments on time.

D.   Always show your thinking process on assignments.

E.   Listen in class.  There is a difference between listening and hearing.

F.    Use good discussion skills.

G.  Respect your classmates as well as your teacher.

H.   Contribute in group activities. (Everyone in the group contributes.)

I.       Keep your notebook organized at all times.

J.     Be happy and enjoy learning.

The Dallas Independent School District and the Texas Education Agency have created a bank of objectives that should be mastered in Algebra Two.  The objectives reflect the concepts that you should understand by the end of the school year.  Understanding the concepts will prepare you for your next adventure in mathematics.  You need to understand the concepts and not memorize them for the moment.  Some of the concepts that you will learn in Algebra Two are listed below.

ALGEBRA TWO OBJECTIVES

A.   Identify the mathematical domains and ranges of functions and determine reasonable values for continuous and discrete situations.

B.   Collect & organize data, make & interpret scatterplots, fit the graph of a function to the data, interpret the results, and predict and make decisions.

C.   Use factoring and properties of exponents to simplify expressions and transform and solve equations.

D.   Use complex numbers to describe solutions of quadratic equations.

E.   Analyze situations and formulate systems of equations in two or more unknowns or inequalities into unknowns to solve problems.

F.    Use algebraic methods, graphs, tables, or matrices, to solve systems of equations or inequalities.

G.  Identify and sketch graphs of parent functions, including linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, absolute value, square root, and reciprocal of x.

H.   Describe the effects of parameter changes on the graph of parent functions.

I.       Describe a conic section as the intersection of a plane and a cone.

J.     Identify a conic section from a given equation & use completing the square.

K.   Interpret and describe the effects of changes in the parameters of quadratic functions in applied and mathematical situations.

L.    Analyze situations involving quadratic functions and formulate quadratic equations or inequalities to solve problems.

M.  Determine solutions of square root equations using graphs, tables, and connect inverses of square root functions with quadratic functions.

N.   Formulate equations and inequalities based on rational functions, use a variety of methods to solve them, and analyze the solutions.

O.  Formulate equations and inequalities based on exponential and logarithmic functions, use a variety of methods to solve, and analyze solutions.

P.   Determine solutions of exponential and logarithmic inequalities using graphs and tables.

Each six weeks you will receive a schedule that will serve as a guide for you for the six weeks.  The schedule will include the projected dates that each of the concepts for the six weeks will be covered.  According to your needs, there can be times when we might need to spend more or less time on a concept than originally planned.

The Grading Policy is established by Dallas Independent School District.  The policy is as listed.

GRADING POLICY

  Class and Homework                    40%

  Quizzes and Examinations           25%

  Projects                                          20%

  Six Weeks Examinations              15%

Assignments are due on time.  The highest grade that one can receive on an assignment that is turned in late is an 80.  Twenty points are deducted for each day the assignment is late.

I will be available for tutoring after school Tuesday and Thursday.  If you need to come to tutoring before school or after school other than Tuesday or Thursday, please make arrangements with me.    I do encourage you to come to tutoring not only for Algebra Two but for all your classes.  It shows you care and makes a good impression on teachers.

A “Blog” has been created for our Algebra Two class.  The purpose of the blog is to have a means with which to communicate with each other as well as the teacher.  The blog is private, therefore only our class has access to it.  The site is www.scroggsblog.wikispaces.com.

Again, welcome to Algebra Two.  It is my hope that you will have a rewarding and successful year in Algebra Class.

J.A. Scroggs, Instructor
