Mrs. Schattle's Kindergarten Welcome to KA!

Magnificent May

It is hard to believe that we are winding down our year!  May will be a busy month for us as we finish up our lessons and practice for our graduation.  So many exciting things will be happening in May.  We will be attending the school play on May 11th and our field trip to the Biomes will be on May 18th.  Below is a look ahead at what we will be learning about in May.

Reading

We will be finishing up the alphabet with letters Y and Z and place a focus on the vowels, digraphs, and initial consonant blends.  We will continue to work on our Snappy Words and finish our year with: here, to, up, get, where, and, you, that, and go.  We have been working on writing sentences and will continue to do this striving toward independent sentence writing.  As we continue to work on our reading comprehension, we will focus on drawing conclusions, classifying, and comparing and contrasting.  Please continue to read to your child each day and have your child practice reading their weekly readers to you.

Math

This month we will be learning about subtraction.  We will be using vocabulary such as “subtract”, “minus”, and “take away”.  We will also continue to practice our addition facts.  Basic math facts are the foundation for all future mathematics, so please work on addition and subtraction facts with your child each week.  Flash cards are a fun way to learn our math facts!

Science

We will continue to learn about the lifecycle of a butterfly.  We have constructed a butterfly nursery for our classroom.  Caterpillars will be arriving to our classroom soon.  We will watch as they eat and grow plump, then build their cocoon, and finally emerge as beautiful butterflies.  When they finally hatch, we will say a pray and release them from the nursery.

Social Studies

This month we will be learning about ocean animals!  We will be reading various non-fiction stories to learn facts about our favorite sea animals!  We will also incorporate some fun fiction books!  We will culminate our unit at the end of the month with a field trip to the Biomes Marine Center.  This is a fun center that will give the children a hands-on experience with some of the sea animals that we will have learned about throughout the month.

Religion

This month we will be listening to many of the stories from the bible.  Last week we learned about Jonah and the Whale.  Coming up we will learn about David and Goliath, Joseph and his coat of many colors, Daniel and the Lions, and many more fun stories that teach us about God’s love for us.  We will also continue to practice our daily prayers.

Please be on the lookout for more graduation information coming your way!  I am so excited to show you what your child has blossomed into this year!  Have a magnificent May!
