Welcome to 9th Grade English!!
This semester in English I will be comprised of reading, discussing, presenting and writing. The core works we will explore together will be selections from but not exclusive to Richard Connell, Guy de Maupassant and Edgar Allan Poe as well as The Odyssey by Homer. We will read a Holocaust selection(s); novels entitled Fahrenheit 451, To Kill a Mockingbird, and A Catcher in the Rye may be read in the Gifted and Honors classes. A drama, of A Streetcar Named Desire will be required and the classic, Romeo and Juliet will also be explored. Students will pick one novel of their choice to read and creatively present to the class. A research paper will be submitted several weeks before the end of the semester. There will also be opportunities for group presentations as well as reading and writing poetry. Writer's Workshop will afford the opportunity for creative writing as well as expository and persuasive essays. FCAT strategies will be implemented in both the areas of reading and writing. SAT and AP strategies will also be introduced. Sentence formulas and some grammar will be reinforced. In this class, active participation and spirited class discussions will be expected.
STATE CURRICULUM
I. Major concepts/content: The purpose of this course is to provide integrated educational experiences in the language arts area of reading, writing, listening, viewing, speaking, vocabulary and literature. The content should include, but not be limited to, the following:
- using reading strategies to construct meaning from informative, technical, and literary texts
- acquiring an extensive vocabulary through reading, discussing, listening
- systematic word study
- using process writing strategies, student inquiry, and self monitoring techniques
- using speaking, listening, and viewing strategies in formal presentations and informal discussions
- understanding and responding to a variety of literary forms
- understanding and using language successfully to impact readers, writers, listeners, speakers, and viewers
