Ammonia Factory Instructions

Ammonia Factory Assignment Instructions

On the website you will visit today, you are going to learn how ammonia is made. Be sure to read the Project Description carefully, because you will have to use what you learn about ammonia to carry out a “virtual” experiment later on. After you read the Project Description, review the Experimental Design Basics. When you finish reading this short page, test yourself by taking a quick Variables Quiz (do NOT print a confirmation page).

Now you are ready to begin your trials at the Ammonia Factory. Your goal is to use you knowledge of experimental design to produce the most ammonia—in Liters per hour (L/hr)—and maximize your profits. You will need to fiddle with the various sliders for temperature, pressure, H2 flow rate, and N2 flow rate in order to maximize you output. BIG HINT: Keep in mind that in any experiment, we can only measure the effects of ONE variable at a time!

Please do NOT share your techniques or settings with others! Everyone needs the chance to try this and experiment on their own!

Assignment Grade for Today:

When you think you have maximized your profits, open a Word document and add your heading. In the Word doc, record the exact temperature, pressure, H2 flow rate and N2 flow rate that produces the most ammonia and earns you the most profit. Be sure to record your actual maximum ammonia production and maximum profits as well!  And don’t forget to include your units! When you are done, PRINT your results and turn them in the folder on the back table.

You might want to keep these instructions open and refer back to them.
