Potential Science Challenges and Competitions for SIP

Science contests and competitions present wonderful opportunities for students to apply their skills at challenging new levels while exploring topics and taking on engaging challenges. Some contests allow students to enter independently, while others offer competitors the opportunity to work with their peers and enter as part of a team. Some of these contests even offer prizes and awards for the students and the schools, as well as the chance to travel for national or international competitions!

Interested? Check out these resources! Let Mrs. Flynt know which program(s) interest you and what you endeavor to accomplish!

Remember to keep your ASSIGNMENT in mind as you explore possible project options!

ExploraVision Awards
http://www.exploravision.org
Sponsored by Toshiba and NSTA, ExploraVision is a competition for students of all interest, skill, and ability levels in grades K-12. Entrants must be United States or Canadian citizens or legal residents, living within the United States, U.S. Territories, or Canada. Winning students receive savings bonds.

Indian River Lagoon Envirothon

The IRL Envirothon was designed to promote environmental awareness and stewardship. Students that participate in the IRL Envirothon will learn about local environmental issues and the challenges we face in the management of our natural resources, including management of our renewable and non-renewable natural resources. The Envirothon would definately be a HUGE benefit to students who want to do well on the 8th Grade Science FCAT. The IRL Envirothon also helps to develop students’ critical thinking, cooperative problem solving and decision-making skills (making it a perfect option for your SIP). They won't have their website up until September, but I have some email addresses for local contacts in charge of the Indian River Lagoon Envirothon. Please let me know is you have ANY questions. They really WANT some of you to participate!

National Engineers Week Future City Competition
http://www.futurecity.org
The National Engineers Week Future City Competition is a fun and exciting educational engineering program for 7th and 8th grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future. Groups of students use team work, problem-solving approaches, and skills in mathematics and science, computers, and research and presentations to design cities using SimCity software. Regional contests lead to the national competition.

Earth Science Week Contests

http://www.earthsciweek.org/contests/

Since October 1998, the American Geological Institute has organized this national and international event to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth Sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth. This year's Earth Science Week will be held from October 10-16 and will celebrate the theme "Exploring Energy." Students can enter three different contests: photography, visual arts, and/or and essay contest.

Cassini Scientist for a Day is an essay contest designed to give students a taste of life as a scientist. Students compare and research three possible targets that the Cassini spacecraft can image during a given time set aside for education. They are to choose the one observation they think will yield the best science results and explain their reasons in an essay. The next edition of the contest is under way. Short videos in support of each observation are now available. The deadline for the contest is Oct. 27, 2010.

Young Naturalist Awards

http://www.amnh.org/nationalcenter/youngnaturalistawards/index.html

The Young Naturalist Awards is an inquiry-based science competition for students in grades 7-12 to promote participation and communication in science. The Young Naturalist Awards recognizes the accomplishments of students who have investigated questions they have in the areas of biology, Earth science, ecology, and astronomy. Every year, scientists from the American Museum of Natural History go on expeditions to gather evidence to add to our understanding of the natural world. Following in that tradition, students throughout the United States and Canada are invited to conduct their own scientific investigations that include questions, hypotheses, and trips into the field to gather data.

President's Environmental Youth Awards

http://www.epa.gov/peya/

Since 1971, EPA has sponsored the President's Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA). The program recognizes young people across America for projects which demonstrate their commitment to the environment. Young people in all 50 states and the U.S. territories are invited to participate in the program. Projects submitted in the past have covered a wide range of subject areas including recycling programs in schools and communities; construction of nature preserves; major tree planting programs; videos, skits, and newsletters created by students that focused on environmental issues; and environmental science projects. To be eligible to compete, a student or group of students, sponsored by an adult, must submit to their local EPA regional office evidence of a completed project as defined in the PEYA application, as well as a completed application.
