Welcome and General Information

Welcome to Isbell Elementary!  We are so pleased that you are here.  We hope you have a wonderful experience.

Hello everyone.  My name is Dana Cruz and I am your counselor at Isbell
Elementary.  I welcome all of you to a new and rewarding school year.

This will be my 17th year in education.  I continue to take college
classes and attend workshops that will assist me in helping my students.  I
feel that there is always something to learn and I try to instill that in
the students. 

During the school year I will be going into the classrooms to teach guidance
lessons. The state requires us to teach various Health TEKS and guidance
strands. Throughout the year we will cover: Drug and Alcohol Awareness,
Personal Safety, respect, cooperation, responsibility, self-respect,
conflict resolution, making good choices, listening, test taking tips, and
good manners.  We will also be covering health issues with the assistance of
the school nurse. This will also be our second year doing College Awareness
Weeks. 

My other duty is to conduct assessments.  I organize and administer the
CogAT test for first graders, the ITBS test for second graders, and the TAKS
tests for 3rd through fifth graders.

I have a monthly newsletter that will be sent home via email. We are try to
Go Green.  In it you can read about upcoming school events, receive tips on
various topics, and read about the content of the guidance lessons.  You can
also access the monthly newsletter on this website.

The monthly guidance lesson topics can be found on the announcements page. 
There is also a list of books that cover those topics if you would like to
reinforce them at home. 

For the 5th graders, I will be discussing the transition to middle school at
the end of the year. I understand that this is a difficult time for both the
students and the parents.  There are several new requirements for the
students and they tend to be nervous. I will provide them with tips on how
to maneuver around the new environment.
