Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY)
Hoover Middle School is partnering with Stanford University, using their Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY). EPGY is a computer-based project dedicated to developing and offering multimedia courses in Mathematics. EPGY provides students of all ages with individualized instruction that accommodates individual differences in student learning.
EPGY offers a complete sequence of mathematics courses from the kindergarten-level through the advanced undergraduate-level. Courses include exercises in which students answer questions and receive immediate feedback from the computer. Children progress at their own pace through the curricula. Courses are arranged in six different learning strands. The student cycles through the strands and is moved forward in each strand independent of their performance in other strands. This approach gives the student the opportunity to fully master each concept. Time is not a factor. Emphasis is placed on the right answer not the quick answer. Students receive immediate feedback, bolstering their math and language confidence levels. The program continually assesses students’ progress so students spend their time learning rather than taking tests. Success is defined by a student’s understanding and retention of concepts. As the student works with EPGY they begin to apply the knowledge gained in the program to other aspects of their life; from ‘when is the paper due in social studies’ to ‘how long it will take to travel to a destination'. Parents and educators are provided with valuable monitoring capabilities. With a few keystrokes you can bring up reports on your student’s progress; replaying an entire learning session if you like. It is quick and easy to pinpoint any areas the student is experiencing difficulty. This allows the parent or educator to provide additional instruction in precisely the area needed.
Access EPGY from Home
Stanford EPGY can be accessed from any internet connected computer -- from home, the library, a coffee shop, etc. All currently enrolled EPGY students have unlimited access to EPGY to continue to strengthen their math skills.
See the files section (at the bottom of this page) for instructions in either English or Spanish for details on how to use EPGY.
EPGY Math Lab
For the 2011-2012 school year, students taking the Math Lab class will be using EPGY 2-3 days a week during their math period for an average of about 100 EPGY minutes a week.
