Last announcements for the year....
Please let us know if your child will be leaving anytime before Friday, June 1 at 11:30. Summer Reading from ASB’s iCommons (Information Commons)
The digital age has transformed every aspect of our lives, Annette Lamb in her article Transmedia Universe, says “Reading is no more considered a linear format with a beginning and an end. With mobile devices, multimedia publishing and social technologies, stories now contain text, images and sounds that reflect the changing landscape of reading. We now have Interactive story books, Reference Databases and Transmedia Stories that involve nonlinear participatory elements like maps, web-bases clues, social media connections, guides and games and a whole world of interactive comics online.”
Summer reading has always been an important part of a child's life. Research studies have shown that reading during the summer accelerates a child's academic and literacy performance in school. (-; Sincerely, Andrea Johnston, Jane Hoover D'silva, Andrew Marama, Swapna Trivedy & Shilpa Sanghavi Thursday, May 27 If you've been following the school calendar or previous school year tradition... Due to the move, the extensive set up, use of school personel and use of classroom time, the Swim Gala has been canceled. Mr. Atherton will be informing you officially. Thanks for your understanding and support. (-; We are reviewing and wrapping up in math with independent inquiries, practice & review. Our Transitions unit in the 'Who we are' theme is focusing on puberty and the physical aspects of this phase at the moment. This is a great opportunity to open those conversations with your children or touch base with them if you've already done so. Students are very curious and come with a variety of knowledge - some more factual than others, from impressions, older friends or ....? It's a great way to be sure they are getting accurate information and know they can come to you with questions. In these next two weeks, Students are creating a Transition journal, which will collate writing about moments in their elementary life, using a variety of writing styles, as well as pieces from the Transitions Unit. They will take this home the last days of school. Don't forget these dates: Grade 5 ceremony & party - Tuesday, May 29th 3:15 starting in 5A/5B and then moving to the pool until 5PM. We will be continuing our Algebra unit in math and continuing on with the unit Who we Are, which Mr. Jeff has introduced with his sessions on adolescence. We will continue to work on reading &writing skills, along with word work, as we wrap up the year. From the Library to ASB iCommons. Exhibition update: Exhibition Parent/teacher night will be from 6-7:30 on Wednesday, May 2. Please plan to take your child home for the space between 3 and 5:30PM as it helps the students to get a breather between the final rehearsals and the actual presentations. This is a good time for students to take a shower, relax a bit, change and come back in refreshed. Students should be dressed nicely. In the past students who live too far away have gone home with a friend or gone to a nearby hotel for a bit with a parent. We will check in with you, however early next week if neither of these options work for you.

April 23rd– May 18th Students need to come prepared for class each day—thisincludes: HAT (long hair), GOGGLES (buy in school store), SUIT, andTOWEL. Goggles seem to be the thing that the kids have the hardest time keeping track of---yet one of the most important pieces of equipment for their learning. Please write your child’s name on his/her goggles so they can be returned if left behind. If your child is not swimming, he/she will be completing written work. Thanks for your cooperation! Ms. Brown, ES PE FON/PON - We are so glad so many of you were able to celebrate with us before the break! TedX - for the first time, Grade 5 is being invited to attend the TedX being hosted by ASB on Wednesday, April 18. This is quite a privilege and is a wonderful opportunity for our students to see some live presentations as they will begin planning their own final Exhibition presentations. It is imperative that students are on time and ready by 8AM. MAP testing on Wednesday - Friday, April 18-20 starting first thing in the morning. This will affect any Exhibition mentor meetings or plans scheduled at 8:15 and possible 9AM on those 3 days. Thank you for rescheduling with the students by choosing a time already mentioned on the mentor calendar (online as well as in each classroom) & letting us know of the change.
No preparation is needed for the tests, but good nights of sleep, healthy food, and activity throughout the week help. Math: solidifying relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages
Literacy - students are finishing up their Video Game writing, which reviewed 3 writing genres that we studied earlier in the year - ask them to share it with you! (-;
Exhibition - the two weeks before break students researched their inquiry into our central idea. This week students are busy brainstorming, planning, organizing, and figuring out how best to share their learning in some or several creative ways. Their enthusiasm and hard work is evident. Ask them about what they have learning about the topic, about collaborating, about planning and organizing, about working through the process, etc. This phase will continue into the middle of next week. Laptops for Middle School (& maybe even the rest of 5th Grade...) - Dr. Luthra will be sending out a message with new information about laptops for next year. A few highlights from the past.... HOW WE EXPRESS OURSELVES
People can interact with each other and communicate using creative forms of expression.
1) How people have used technology over time to express their creativity.
2) The ways people communicate messages through creative use of the arts.
3) How forms of communication can evoke a response. (How I want my audience to feel.)
NUT Allergies. Please remember we have students who are very sensitive to foods containing nuts and even making contact with peanut oil or residue can cause a bad reaction. So please do not send nut snacks with your child to school. Parents have been exceptional when it comes to shared birthday treats. Thank you. Following our Exhibition unit, we will have a short unit on Who we Are and how we grow from children to adults. To better set up this unit, Dr. Mostade will be visiting our classrooms over the next month and looking at adolescence. After Exhibition, we will be examining the physical changes that occur, initiated by the same changes in the brain discussed in relation to adolescence, during puberty. Nothing further will be addressed in class. Students usually find this knowledge, information and process to be relevant, interesting and it opens up opportunities to important conversations you can have at home. This is just for your information in case you would like to have conversations with your child along the next few months. Following, are links to our new student-developed blogs! These blogs will be updated by the students. We want to see what 5th grade looks like from the 5th grade perspective. Refer to the blogs for homework help, 5th grade news, fun facts, games, interesting links, photos, video, digital citizenship, social networking, etc. http://asbteam5a.blogspot.com/ http://asbteam5b.blogspot.com/ http://asbteam5c.blogspot.com/
General Info: Snacks: Please send a healthy snack for first break (9:55AM) if they get hungry during the morning. Students are not allowed to buy snacks from the cafeteria in the morning.
Health & safety: Student are encouraged to have and use water bottles as well as hats or sunscreen when they go outside. If specific medications are necessary, please address this with the nurses at the Health Office.
Birthdays: We love celebrating birthdays! If you and your child would like, they are invited to bring and share a treat with their individual class (at this point each section has 18 or 19 students and 5 teachers) or for the whole grade level. We have several students with peanut allergies and some students who do not eat egg. Please consider this when choosing a snack to bring and share. Sometimes people bring two options for this reason.
Homework: students have up to 50 min of homework... generally this is making connections between school and home, reading and working towards personal goals.
Website: Find our website through ASB dashboard / ES Classes/ Grade 5 Shared site with separate class pages. We will update this every other week with updates about our learning in classes as well as recent photos. Please check it regularly as this is our main mode of general communication.
