9th GRADE PARENT/STUDENT NIGHT

Fall 2011

  • The purpose of 9th grade parent/student night is to present parents and 9th graders with information that is key to having a successful high school experience. Topics that will be discussed are: GA College 411 site, Math requirements, and information all 9th graders and their parents should know about, how high school works.

Below you will find the information that was discussed.

How High School Works

Please click on the file "How High School Works" at the bottom of this page.

Math Requirements

4 Years of Math is required to graduate in the state of Georgia!!!

  • If a student fails Math 1a, they continue to Math 1b.
  • Students do not continue on to Math 2 until they pass both semesters of Math 1 (this is a state rule).
  • If students fail any part of Math 1, they need to take summer school to get back on track.

EOCT Math 1 and Math 2.  Must pass one of these two or the Math Portion of the Graduation Test.

  What students can do …

·         Come to class prepared

·         Take notes.

·         Do homework.

·         Get extra help when it is needed.

·         Keep an organized notebook.

·         Make up work promptly.

Students…

·         Come to class prepared to work.

o   Have pencil, pens, paper, textbook, notebook, calculator, and agenda.

o   Be mentally ready to work.

o   Be seated when the bell rings.

Parents…find out if your child has the supplies he needs.  Make sure they understand that effort is needed to learn new material.

Students…

·         Take notes.

o   Use them to help do the homework.

o   Keep them to study for quizzes, tests, finals—we are finding them in the trash.

o   Some teachers have note sheets on their websites.  Students may print them out and fill in the parts that are missing rather than copy all of the notes.

Parents… Ask to see your child’s notes.  When they ask you to help with homework, ask them to see the examples they copied.

Students…

·         Do homework.

o   Every night.

o   Looking at the problems doesn’t count as attempting them.

o   Show work.

o   Seek help if needed.

o   Participate in discussion of homework.

Parents…Ask to see there homework each night.  Encourage them to study math even if they say they finished the homework.  Monitor Infinite Campus to see it is being turned in.

Students…

·         Get extra help when it is needed

o   Teachers are available some mornings and afternoons.  Many have a place on the board where they indicated their availability for the week.

o   Math Lab Monday thru Thursday 8:00 to 8:30 and 3:45 to 4:10.

Students sign in and then are helped by Peer tutors (math team members).

Parents… Write a pass for your child to get extra help in the mornings.  Hall monitors require a pass after 8:10 am.

Students…

·         Keep an organized notebook

o   Teachers expect students to have the notes they have given them.  If a student asks a question before they have looked at their notes, they haven’t really tried the problem.

o   They have an EOCT in May and will need to be prepared for it.

Parents  Ask to see their notebook.  If it is a mess, help them organize it.   If it is empty, ask why.

Students…

·         Make up work promptly

o   Students are required to make up work within 5 days if the absence is excused.

o   Students should makeup work when they miss for a field trip within one day.

o   If they miss tests or quizzes, they should plan to come before or after school to make it up.

Parents… If your child has missed class, ask if they have spoken to the teacher about makeup work.  Encourage them to attend school every day.

Have your student see their Guidance Counselor if they don't remember

their login information.  In September, all 9th graders (if they were

present in school) created an account on this website, completed a careers

survey, saved at least 3 careers to their portfolio, and they started to

work on their 4 year high school plan.

Four Year High School Plan

Attached under the "Related Files" section you'll find a 4 year high school plan example to follow in

helping your student complete their plan on their GAcollege411 account.  Also attached is an

instruction sheet for completing a career search, college search, and developing a high school plan.
