How to get an "A" in my class, and other notes to Parents by Genevieve POUCEL
I have been teaching French, and beginning Spanish for 10 years in District 11. I use a teaching method which requires the student to listen to the teacher. The student must therefore BE in class, in order to LISTEN to the teacher. As a teacher, my challenge is also to speak in a way that is COMPREHENSIBLE by the student. It is my experience, that students who earn "A"s in my class, do two things:
1. They come to class (miss no more than 2 classes per semester and make up work) 2. They simply DO what I assign.
When a student misses French or Spanish class, then they are losing ground on the learning we are doing in class, and their grade. These classes are being taught at school, not at home, on the internet, in a book, nor by their parents. ATTENDANCE is mandatory to success. I have students who schedule their doctor's appointments around their language class. When an absence occurs, I find two actions successful:
1. Write a polite note to me, on a full sheet of paper, explaining the absence, and requesting make-up work. This paper can be given to me prior to absence as well. 2. Visit with me at lunch, and make-up any quizzes, or assignments missed.
PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY:
1. When your student is absent, you EXCUSE the absence. (Unexcused absences do not get to make-up quizzes, homework, etc...) 2. Your student ARRIVES to school on time. (3 times tardy = 1 lunch detention)
MY GOAL :
It is my goal that every student in my classroom learns as much French, or Spanish, as I can possibly teach. Students can understand, sing, and speak the language they are learning. In order to do this, class participation needs to be positive. Students respect each other, me, other teachers, and visiting teachers. This year I see no grade lower than a C, and with only higher grades on my roster, we celebrate.
ZANG!E:
If you need Zang!e to be updated in order to earn a privilege, play a sport, etc...please let me know before Friday. It takes me 3 days, at least, to get grades entered, I enter attendance and participation grades every 2 weeks.
SUPPLIES:
Folder (every day), lined paper, black felt pen, ball-point pens and pencils, colored pencils, video cameras, power-point and internet (students have computers in almost every classroom at school, at their disposal, and can check out a movie camera at school) possibly watercolor paints, white-out and masking tape.
FUND RAISING:
As a member of French Club, we fund raise for 2 reasons :
1. Students saving for a 3 week home-stay trip to France 2. Haiti Goat Project, see link on Link page.
Once per month, we will sell croissants, cinnamon rolls, etc, to whole school. Parents are welcome to place an order. Students pay @ $2.50 for this snack.
