Course Description and Grading Criteria

Course Description:
This course allows students to develop skills and techniques necessary to prepare graphic materials for effective communications and presentations. Students are introduced to design principles, electronic media, and digital print communications. Emphasis is also placed on oral presentation techniques. Basic keyboarding skills are also emphasized.
Instructional Philosophy:
- The teacher will explain, demonstrate, observe, review, evaluate, and correct student’s performance.
- Students will work both individually and in small groups.
- Classroom activities will include reading, research, hands – on activities, class discussions and the use of software applications.
Classroom instructional strategies will include using the following:
· LCD projector/SmartBoard
· Online tutorials
· Word walls
· Short and long-term assignments posted
· Suggested solutions posted
Course Goals:
- Develop correct keyboarding techniques, speed, and accuracy.
- Understand the role of communication and how it relates to personal interests and aptitudes.
- Learn how to create a newsletter and a brochure.
- Learn how to research, develop and effectively present information.
- Identify logos and slogans and create a personal logo.
- Use Publisher, PowerPoint, Adobe PhotoShop and Movie Maker.
- Recognize and effectively apply the art elements and design principles.
Materials:
Students are expected to have a 1” 3-ringed binder with 4 dividers to organize their course work. Notebooks will be graded periodically. Divider sections are: Warm-Ups, Keyboarding, Class Work, and Portfolio Choices.
Major Course Assignments and Projects:
1. Keyboarding Pro – formative maximum weight 2 each
Students will complete a series of lessons in which they will learn the proper key techniques. Students may receive a summative grade for Keyboarding Pro technique evaluations and quizzes.
2. Communication PowerPoint – summative weight 2
Students will research a career and design a PowerPoint that describes how they could use the three types of communication in their area.
3. Newsletter – formative weight 1
Students will create a Newsletter about themselves using Microsoft Publisher. The newsletter should include at least two articles.
4. Interview Skills – summative weight 2
Students will use the information they receive from an interview to design an effective PowerPoint presentation that accurately portrays the interviewee. Students will practice interviewing skills prior to completing this project.
5. Logo Design – summative weight 2
Students will create a label for a beverage container which includes a student designed logo.
6. Photoshop – summative weight 2
Students will edit images using Adobe Photoshop. Editing techniques may include transformations, cropping, color adjustments and the use of filters or effects.
7. Web Design – summative weight 2
Students will create a web page using Microsoft Word which includes appropriate graphics, content, and navigation links in an effective layout.
8. Movie Maker – summative weight 3
Students will create a movie using Movie Maker.
9. Quizzes – summative weight 1
Quizzes assess the students understanding of terms and procedures based on the objectives of a lesson.
Grading Criteria:
Marking period grades will be made up of Formative grades and Summative grades.
Formative grades (warm-ups, class work, homework, daily activities, and class participation) will account for approximately 30% of the marking period grade.
Summative grades (quizzes, tests, practice sets, simulations and notebooks) will account for approximately 70% (not to exceed 80%) of the marking period grade.
Final grades will be calculated in accordance with the CCPS grading policy.
v Assignments submitted late will be penalized 7% for each day late.
Students will have the opportunity to re-take a quiz or test to improve their grade. This must be arranged with the teacher within one week of receiving the grade for the original assessment.
