 Grade 8 Algebra

The end of the school year and their forthcoming graduation is undoubtedly on this classes minds, but we still have some very important topics to master.  We have just taken a quiz on solving and determining linear equations using graphing and the slope-intercept form.  We still have to conquer linear and quadratiac functions as defined by equations,  solving systems of linear equations by the substitution and addition-or-subtraction methods, solving inequality and absolute value sentences, and using the quadratic formula.  Now is not the time to think that they can let their work slide.   Math, like any subject requires study.  It would help them greatly if they would review their notes daily, not just before a quiz or test, and completely do their assignments nightly.  Two great resource books that might come in very handily for their high school mathematics work are (1) Algebra to Go:  A Mathematics Handbook and (2) Geometry to Go:  A Mathematics Handbook.  Both of these books can be purchased from ETA Cuisenaire for $34.95 each.

 PRE - ALGEBRA

We have just recently finished the unit on equations and the coordinate plane.  Our next unit will be on statistics and probablilty.  We will be finding measures of central tendency, defining, making, and interpreting various types of graphs, line plots, stem-and-leaf plots, box-and whisker plots, and scatter plots.  We will then work with ratios, proportions, and percents.  The end of the year will find us working with geometry concepts. Math requires study and effort and they are now realizing that fact.  Concepts need to be reviewed on a regular basis - not just before a quiz or test.  a very good resourse book for algebra for next year is Algebra to Go: A Mathematics Handbook from ETA Cuisenaire at $34.95.

GRADE 6

We are nearly finished unit 11 - Ratios, Proportions, and Percents.  There are three more topics we will be covering - Integers and Coordinate Graphing, Percentage Applications, and Geometry. Their motivation, attitude and attention creates a great atmosphere for learning.
A good resourse book for next year for the pre-algerbra course is Math on Call: A Mathematics Handbook from ETA Cuisenaire for $28.95.
