Curriculum Grade Three Curriculum: English Language Arts: In Third Grade we use the Storytown anthology to teach both reading and writing skills. We read a fiction, or non-fiction story each week from the Storytown anthology. We will also be focusing on writing with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Math: In Third Grade we are teaching math skills with the use of the Everyday Math curriculum. This text was also used in Kindergarten, First and Second Grade. The Everyday Math curriculum will follow your child through Fifth Grade. We have also introduced the Origo Math program this year. Origo Math focuses on building math fact automaticity, and critical thinking skills. Social Studies: The students will learn about the history of Massachusetts from the time of the Pilgrims, including historical events and famous people. They will also study the history of Scituate through experiences provided by classroom teachers and the Scituate Historical Society. Science: Inquiry is a vital part of the domain of science. Active engagement in hands on experiments, journal writing, and discussion will help to increase students' understanding of the following: Rocks and their properties, the Water Cycle, and Plants. Open Circle: This is a curriculum that teaches social skills to the students. The program used to teach crucial social skills is the Open Circle curriculum.
