2. No desks!

blog photo

I love our new tables!!!  Our first activity was to write about our favorite kind of pizza on triangular shaped paper.  As the children worked, they decided that they would like to put their writing together to make a whole pizza.  They created their own fraction and addition problem!   They discovered that five kids from one table plus 2 more kids would still need one more slice to make an eight cut pizza!   How fun!  I am so excited about my smart new class!

3. I am so excited for Sherry!!!

Sherry Mills' poppy poster won the state level competition in her age division!  Her name was announced at the American Legion Auxiliary Department of New York 91st Annual Convention held in Binghamton, New York on July 14, 2011!  Sherry, I am so very proud of you!

4. Document Camera

I can’t begin to put my appreciation into words.  For those of you who may not know, our PTO won a grant that allowed them to purchase several document cameras for use with our Smartboards.  My class was one of the very lucky recipients.

We’ve had the equipment for about one week and it has already proven to be a tremendous instructional asset!  The very first day we did “real world” math with it.  I dumped my coin purse under the document camera to count the change.  In addition to a practical math lesson, it turned into a history and language lesson when we found a 1944 “mercury” or “liberty dime” mixed in with the coins!  We were able to enlarge the image of a current dime and the old one for a comparing and contrasting lesson followed by on-line research of the old coin.  We have also used the new document camera everyday to make addition with regrouping come to life in new and concrete ways.

Thank you to all of the parents of the PTO who work so hard to make these wonderful technological advancements available to our students.

5. Hurray for Comedy Day!!!

Thank you to everyone who took time out of their work day to come to our very first comedy day.  I thought the kids did a great job!  They could not have been any cuter!  Adorable!

6. Snow Days

Hi Friends,

While you are home for the snow day, play reading and math games on the links page, email your friends from epals, or play one of our math card games.  Don't forget to read a few good books!  That's what I'll be doing.

Your friend,

Mrs. Futia

7. Looping Rocks!

We had such a great first day back to school!  It was such a treat to see my old friends and hear about their summer vacations.  We enjoyed meeting our new friends and teaching them a math game.  Pardon me for bragging, but I think I have the best class!

8. Looping Up

I am so excited about starting second grade!  It is always stimulating to change grade levels, but this will be especially enjoyable because I will have so many of my old friends sharing the experience with me.  Our “loop” together begins Wednesday!

9. Summer is going by so quickly!

Hi Friends!

I hope that everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather and spending some time outside.  I have been at Five Rivers this week.  I can't wait to tell you all about the animals I have seen and everything I have learned about plants.

I am so excited about starting second grade and I hope that you are too! I'll see you soon.

10. ; )

I love my job.

I love our school.

I love my class.

Thanks to the generosity of our classroom families, we have ink to print our chick stories and we again have a working listening station.  Heartfelt thanks to everyone for their fast response to my plea for help.  Special thanks to Xander, Robert, Monica, and Logan's families.

While you're on-line, visit the new ocean page under the science tab to see what the children did today in the computer lab. They worked so hard.   I could not be prouder!

11. A Great Day at School

Hip Hip Hurray!  A chick hatched today!

Special thanks to Mr. Multari and Tyler Patterson for bringing in the eggs and incubator for us.  Egg "T9" hatched first, so I named it "Mr. T.".  By the time I left school at 5 o'clock, a second chick had hatched and a third had made a crack.  I can't wait to see how many more will hatch and what names my students will come up with for our newest classmates!

12. I was honored as Teacher of the Month.

I wish to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to Tyler and his family for nominating me as The Cat Teacher of the Month.  This award means more than they could ever know.

I would also like to express my gratitude to 98.5 WCTW “The Cat” FM and their generous sponsors.  It is such an honor to be recognized.  I am truly overwhelmed by the lovely gifts from Kingston Fine Jewelry, Lime Gazelle, Sawyer Chevrolet, and EmUrgent Care.  http://www.985litefm.com/main.html

CA is a district filled with dedicated professionals.  My colleagues, my first grade team, our supportive principal, Mr. Martino, and of course, my sweet class, make it a pleasure to teach at EJA.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank my husband who never complains when I work late and still bring more work home.  With his love and encouragement, I am inspired to face each day with joy in my heart.
