War War is actually a great way to develop number comparison skills as children compare the value of cards to determine who takes the pile. Variations of War *FlipHigh, Flip Low This games develops concepts of greater than and less than. *The Whole Deal The object of the game is to create many ways to find the same sum or difference, thereby practicing addition, subtraction, and number sense.
Each player places two cards down instead of one. The player must add their two cards to determine which player has the higher value and wins the pile.
Each player takes half of the deck and places it face down. The first player calls "high" or "low". Both players flip their first card. If the player called "high", the person with the highest card takes both. If "low" was called, the player with the lowest card takes both. If the cards are equal, each player returns their card to the bottom of their pile. Play continues with each player having a turn to call high or low. The player with the most cards at the end of playtime wins.
Shuffle the deck and flip the first card. The number shown is the "game number". Place all cards face up in the play area. Players take turns finding pairs of numbers that will create the game number through addition or subtraction. Players should record their number sentences. Play continues until all pairs have been found.
For example, if the game number is 6, a player may choose cards 3 and 3 and record 3+3=6. Other pairings could include 10-4=6, 1+5=6, 7-1=6, and so on.
