The Daily 5 is something we practice in our classroom every day. Read more about how we are learning to be independent readers and writers... Click here to check out The Daily 5 in action in our classroom! The Daily 5 is a framework for teaching students how to read and write independently. The goal of The Daily 5 is to give students the confidence they need to practice literacy activities independently. The Daily 5 also provides choice to students which allows them to have ownership of their learning. It provides an excellent balance between student-centered learning that is developmentally appropriate for Kindergarten students, and the academic challenges that help students be successful readers and writers. The Daily 5 helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence. The Daily 5 are: 1-Read to Self Students read by themselves in any comfortable spot in the room. They choose from the books in their book box. Some books are leveled readers that they have practiced, others are books they have made, and some are favorite stories that they like to retell. We can Read to Self for 20 minutes! 2-Read to Someone Students choose a partner to read with. They take turns reading and listening, using books from their book box. This activity has helped us practice many social skills like cooperation and respect. We can Read to Someone for 20 minutes! 3-Listen to Reading Students listen to reading on the computer. They can choose from a number of websites that offer reading games and read alouds. All of these websites can be found in the "Links" section of our website. We can Listen to Reading for 20 minutes! 4-Work on Writing Students write in their journals independently. They practice choosing a topic, writing a sentence, and illustrating their writing. We can Work on Writing for 20 minutes! 5-Word Work Students choose games from the Word Work shelves that help them practice phonemic awareness, reading, and writing skills including, letter naming, rhyming and sight words. Some of our favorite games are building letters with wood pieces, letter and sound puzzles, writing letters on chalkboards, stamping Elephant Words, rolling dice and reading sentences, and many more! We can do Word Work for 20 minutes!
Children's Choice Each week the students choose which order they would like to complete the 5 activities in. Our goal is that the students will complete all 5 activities throughout the week. We have learned so much about cooperation and compromising when sharing our choices. Many students even offer to change their choice if there are too many students to Listen to Reading on the computers, or if someone is looking for a partner for Read to Someone. Choice is an important part of The Daily 5 and helps the students share responsibility of their learning. While the students are engaged in The Daily 5 the teachers work with small groups or one-on-one in order to better meet the individual literacy needs of all students in our class.
