Welcome back Hearst Hounds! Information is currently available on this page as well as Classroom News.
GATE Testing The GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) test has been scheduled to be administered to our 2nd graders from Februrary 1 -2. (I'll let you know when we have an exact date/time for our class.) The students will all take an exam called the Raven given by the district psychologist. The test is not timed, students may take as much time as they need and are encouraged to do so. The test is mainly a bunch of puzzles and patterns; the students must be able to look carefully for relationships between objects and take their time to work the problems out. This is a tricky one to "study" for, as the test does not contain reading or math. I suggest building puzzles, working with analogies and playing "find the pattern" games.

Who Do you Know? We Need Your Help! We are looking for donated items for our auction! Do you, or someone you know, have a connection at a restaurant, a hair salon, a day spa, a jewelry store, a clothing store, a dry cleaners, a gift boutique, a children’s store, or even a theme park? How about a night at a hotel? How about an exciting get-a-way? Do you own a second home, a time share, or a rental property? Do you have any sporting tickets or theater tickets? Do you know an artist, a music teacher, or a personal trainer? These are just a few suggestions. Let us know if you can help. We hope you can! No donation is too big or too small! We are happy to pick up a donation. We can provide a letter for tax purposes. All donations are 100% tax deductible. Our non-profit tax exempt number is #33-0829526.

Community Heroes See the tab to the left for pictures from the event! -------------------------------------------------- First in Math First in Math is an AMAZING program on the internet that targets math skills. Many classrooms at Hearst are participating in this exciting program!! The program is very simple. Students are asked various math questions, as they get the problems right, they earn 'stickers'. The more stickers a student acquires, the higher the ranking he/she receives. The questions start off easy and then the levels get progressively harder. Have fun and enjoy the great things that "First in Math" has to offer! Students have their usernames and passwords; if you've misplaced the card, send me an email. We will be awarding the "Player of the Day" award each morning to the student with the most stickers in the previous 24 hours. First in Math can be accessed through the following link: www.firstinmath.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Volunteer Information We'd LOVE for you to volunteer in our classroom this year and can't wait to get the whole process rolling! Before you can start, however, the school district is requiring volunteers who will be working directly with students, to complete an application, a TB test, and fill out a Criminal Background Form which will be sent away for screening. This MUST be done before you are able to work with students, help during Art Corps, or even drive on field trips. If you're not sure if you will volunteer, but think that there could be a small chance that you may be able to help, please fill out the papers. The office has all of the information you need - just stop by and they will give the papers to you to complete.
Hearst Student Store Did you know that the Hearst Student Council now has their own store? It is located outside of Mr. Zarro's office and is open during recess on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Items for sale include pencils, erasers, lead, paper, staplers, water, snacks, pencil boxes, and much more! Items range in price from $0.25 to $3.00. More items will be for sale as time goes on. If you are interested, bring your change and get the supplies you need!
