English Language Arts

• Theme Test:  "Silly Stories" (Week of 10/12)
• New Theme:  "Nature Walk"
  
• Phonics Principles:  Compound words; spelling changes when adding -ing (double consonant/drop 'e').
  
• Reading Comprehension Strategies:  Compare/contrast, making predictions, summarizing, topic/main idea/details.
  
• Reader's Workshop:  Children will be engaging in Post-It Reading and writing book reviews, literary letters, and "thick" questions more independently.  Guided Reading and Conferencing will begin this month!
  
• Writer's Workshop:  Brainstorming personal topics, writing a TASK Paragraph (Topic sentence, Add details, Summary sentence, Keep to the topic)
  

Mathematics

• Review basic subtraction, place value, greater and less than, using a number line and hundred chart, even and odd numbers.
  
• We will continue Math 4 Today and Problem of the Day.
  

Social Studies & Science

• Complete Government unit.
• Columbus Day
• Thematic unit:  Frogs!
