Writing Writing

Writing encompasses a variety of areas.  During the course of the school year we will cover handwriting (formation of letters as well as size and spacing), creative writing, ISAT writing, poetry, and informational writing.  Sub pages will be added for additional information on these areas.  Below is a list of writing ideas for independent writing that your child can try at home.

Kid-Writing

When the children are writing independently, they use developmental spelling or 'kid writng'.  We do not restrict them to writing only words that they can spell.  They are putting down the sounds that they hear in the words.  You can help with this by stretching out the sounds or making the sounds sound by sound, not letter by letter for the correct spelling.  I know that it's hard to look at, but, your child will write far less and will come to dread it, if every word is expected to be in grown-up writing.  If a word is on the Word Wall, I will guide them to it.  If the word is in our reading story, I will tell them to find it.  But, I do that after they have completed the writing during the conferencing stage.  When I sit down to write, I want to get the thoughts on paper while they are flowing.  If I have to stop and check everything, I lose my train of thought.  Children are the same way.   Be patient.  You will notice a difference.  I promise.
