Poetry Page
Welcome to the Poetry Page.  Here you will find links to poems that we have explored in class as well as some 'surprise' poems for the children.  I've listed the sounds that we've covered in phonics under the Poetry Page link.  These poems give the children additional practice with the sounds.  Some of them are about topics relating to the sound.   Reading poetry provides the children with the opportunity to practice fluency as well as to develop vocabulary.   Listen for smooth reading along with expression, as these two things are good indicators of fluency.  Since these poems are word documents, you can print them out and your child can decorate them or illustrate them with their own creations.  You could also have your child hi-light certain words like sight words, rhyming words, cool words, or words that go with phonics sounds. Choral reading (2 or more people) or acting out the poem are also options.  I hope that you enjoy this section.  But, beware, if a poem gets memorized, you may hear it more times than you really care to.  If that happens, quickly choose another poem. That works at school.
