Once again, I would like to say how happy I am with the progress the children are making in reading and writing. They have been working hard writing sentences to go with each of our reading stories, and I am amazed at how well they are doing. I am able to read everyone's sentences these days, and I hope you have enjoyed seeing the papers that are coming home.
We have been working on blending short e words and have played games using our SMART board for the et, em, ed, and en word families. Please help your child practice blending. Grammar-This week we introduced the pronoun "I". The students wrote sentences telling something they can do or like to do. Science-We read a book in reading called Seeds and are building on that topic by growing a number of plants in the classroom. We cut an avocado and have it in a jar of water, hoping to grow roots and a stem. We also have last year's avocado plant in the classroom so the students can see what to expect. Next, we are going to try a mushroom garden that was given to me as a gift from my uncle who purchased it for our class thinking the students would enjoy it. I have never grown a mushroom garden before, so it should be interesting for all of us. We watched a movie this week on Brain Pop Jr. that showed the parts of a plant and what each part does for the plant. We made pictures and labeled the parts. Today we formed groups and wrote and illustrated a book to go with the picture. Math-We have now introduced pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters in class. Some of the students need to practice recognizing the coins and counting them to find out how much they are worth. We also practice "purchasing" items on the SMART board and using varying coins to make the correct amount of money.
