Classroom News
Science News We have been observing Worms! We began the year by learning how to be scientists. We read What is a Scientist by Barbara Lehn and discovered the various skills that scientists use. Students have been observing, diagramming, measuring, and writing about worms. We have learned that worms are "nature's plows" by helping plants to grow by tunneling through the soil. Students enjoyed learning about the enemies of worms, and learned that moles can eat up to 30 worms in one day! We have concluded our study with a "gummy worm" experiment. Students predicted how many pennies they thought a gummy worm could hold and they were very surprised by the results! Please ask your child to share their new discoveries with you.
Our first Science kit will be "Pebbles, Sand, and Silt"
We will start our kit by going on a nature walk on the trail behind the school. Students will each choose a special rock. We will then brainstorm a class list of descriptive words to describe our rocks. Students will then write about their rocks using this descriptive language. This will become our first entry in our Science notebooks. In this kit, students will: *Develop a curiosity and interest in the physical world around them. *Observe, describe, and sort earth materials based on properties. *Separate earth materials by size, using different techniques. *Observe the similarities and differences in the materials in a river rock mixture :silt, sand, gravel, and small and large pebbles.
