Kid Writing
The writing program currently being used in our classroom is called Kid Writing, written by Eileen G. Feldgus, Ed.D. and Isabell Cardonick, M.Ed. and published by Wright Group. The philosophy behind this program is that children will:
- learn to read and write best through a gradual progression towards adult writing.
- learn best in a risk-free environment with high levels of challenge and support.
- learn best when paired with peers and adults.
- need frequent, ongoing opportunities to play with written language and investigate how written language works.
- need many opportunities to write about topics of their own choosing.
- have instructors that model the thinking processes involved in creating a piece of writing as an important part of the writing process.
- have instructors that praise all attempts to write at all developmental stages within the writing process.
- engage in an environment that encourages children to have the comfort and confidence to begin writing within their abilities AS CHILDREN! They are not expected to write exactly as adults do. Success occurs not in perfection, but as children's writing begins to more closely resemble "adult" writing.
