Writing Journals

Writing Journals are used everyday in Kindergarten. We started the year by drawing a picture and then writing ( by sounding the word out) what it was as a whole group.

 In the middle of October we started drawing and writing independently. Inventive spelling plays a big role in Journal Writing at this age. The students are highly encouraged to sound out what they want to spell and then write the sounds that they hear.

As always this was a big struggle for the students. They want to spell all the words correctly and want us to tell them how to spell them. It is a great pleasure to watch them sound out words and write what they are hearing. It is an even greater pleasure to the students when we can read what they wrote even if it isn't spelled correctly.

We are currently using starter sentences for writing in our journals. This is in preparation of starting to write our own sentences.
