Corbell Elementary

“Learners today, Leaders tomorrow”

In order to prepare our students for the future, they need to have basic skills like reading, writing, and math.  They also need to have interpersonal skills and communication skills.  It is a known fact that the most common reason that people lose their jobs is not because they are not smart enough or do not know their jobs well enough.  It has been shown that they cannot work on a team and they cannot get along well with others.

At Corbell we truly believe that early intervention is the key and that is where Elementary Counselors come in.  Research shows that the benefits of a comprehensive elementary counseling program include improvement in:

*School attitudes and work habits

*Peer relationships and communication skills

*Motivation, behavior and grades

This data demonstrates that schools providing caring, supportive, and challenging environments have great potential to help students improve academic performance.  Corbell Elementary provides the following counseling services such as individual counseling, small group counseling and classroom guidance for grades kinder through fifth.  All counseling services are provided with the academic setting in mind.

Testing is a part of the school experience at Corbell. These tests help provide information about our students to help serve them successfully.  The tests I coordinate for our campus are the first grade CoGAT tests, the second grade ITBS tests, and finally third through fifth TAKS testing.  The first grade CoGAT test is given in January and the second grade ITBS test is given in November.  Finally, TAKS tests are given in the spring for 3rd – 5th grades.

What is guidance?

Guidance is usually done once a month in each classroom for 20-30 minutes. Due to TAKS testing in the spring, these times may vary.  I go into the classes and do a lesson relating to a life skill, problem solving method, conflict resolution, skills on making friends, and character traits, etc.  In K-2 grade the lesson revolves around a piece of literature.
