American Red Cross Swimming Lesson Descriptions American Red Cross Swimming Lesson Descriptions

Parent & Tot
Ages 6 months through 3 years
Parent must be in the pool
Parent and child will work together in the pool under the direction of a certified instructor to gain both a respect for and enjoyment of the water.  Children will learn to ask permission before entering the water, learn how to enter and exit the water safely, dip their faces into the water, blow bubbles, kick water, walk in water, explore buoyancy, as well as practice water safety.

Children who are not “potty-trained” need to wear swimming diaper




 

Preschool
Must be 4 years old

       Skills: (may be demonstrated with support)

___Enter water using ladder, steps or side

___Exit water using ladder, steps or side

___Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose, 3 seconds

___Submerging mouth, nose, and eyes (bobbing) 5 times

___Opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged object, 2 times

___Front float, 3 seconds

___Front glide, 2 body lengths

___Recover from a front glide to a vertical position

___Back float, 5 seconds

___Back glide, 2 body lengths

___Recover from a back float or glide to a vertical position

___Roll from back to front

___Roll from front to back

Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
Ages 5 to 6 years

Ages 6 to 7 years

___Fully submerging and holding breath, 10 seconds

___Bobbing, 10 times (chest-deep water)

___Opening eyes under water and retrieving submerged object, 3 times

___Rotary breathing (introduction only) 5 times

___Floats (front, jellyfish& tuck), 10 seconds

___Front glide, 2 body lengths

___Recover from a front float or glide to a vertical position

___Back float, 15 seconds

___Back glide, 2 body lengths

___Recover from a back float or glide to a vertical position

___Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back

___Roll from back to front

___Roll from front to back

___Treading water, 15 seconds

___Finning arm action on back, 5 body lengths

___Front crawl, 5 body lengths (15-20 ft)

Ages 8 to 10 years

 

___Enter water by jumping from the side

     (9-feet deep water) submerge & return to surface

 

___Sitting dive (in water at least 9-feet deep)

 

___Kneeling dive (in water at least 9-feet deep)

 

___Bobbing while moving toward safety, 15 times

 

___Rotary breathing, 15 times

 

___Survival float on front, 30 seconds

 

___Back float, 1 minute

 

___Change from vertical to horizontal position on front

 

___Change from vertical to horizontal position on back

 

___Tread water, 1 minute

 

___Push off in a streamlined position on front then begin flutter kicking,

     3-5 body lengths

 

___Kicks – flutter, scissors, breaststroke & dolphin 15 yds

 

___Front crawl, 15 yards with rotary breathing

 

___Back crawl, 15 yards

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
Ages 9 to 13 years

___Feet-first surface dive

 

___Survival swimming, 1 minute (deep water)

 

___Front crawl open turn

 

___Back crawl open turn

 

___Tread water using 2 different kicks, 2 minute (modified scissors, modified breaststroke, or rotary kicks)

 

___Push off in a streamlined position on back begin flutter kicking

     3-5 bodylengths

 

___Push off in a streamlined position on back begin dolphin kicking,

     3-5 body lengths

 

___Front crawl, 25 yards with rotary breathing

 

___Back crawl, 15 yards

 

___Elementary backstroke, 25 yards

 

___Breaststroke, 15 yards

 

___Sidestroke, 15 yards

Level 5: Stroke Refinement
Ages 10 to 13 years

·      ___Breaststroke, 25 yards

·      ___Butterfly, 25 yards

·      ___Back crawl, 25 yards

·      ___Sidestroke, 25 yards

Level 6: Personal Water Safety
Ages 11 to 15 years

·      ___Front crawl, 100 yards

·      ___Elementary backstroke, 100 yards

·      ___Back crawl, 50 yards

·      ___Breaststroke, 50 yards

·      ___Sidestroke, 50 yards

·      ___Butterfly, 50 yards

·      ___Front crawl and backstroke open and flip turns

·      ___Breaststroke, Sidestroke, and butterfly turns

·      ___HELP position and Huddle position

·      ___Surface dives

·      ___Survival and Back float, 5 minutes

·      ___Survival swim, 10 minutes

·      ___Treading water, kicking only, 2 minutes
