Welcome ! ...to the HFCS Character Education Homepage ! What is Character Education? Character Education programs were created as a result of the wave of violence and shootings that took place in schools across the nation in the late 1990’s. Research found that there was a strong correlation between these acts of violence and the lack of basic positive character traits in the perpetrators. To address this issue, Character Education programs were established to make positive character traits an integral part of the school environment. In New York State, the legislature passed the “Safe Schools Against Violence in Education (SAVE) Act”. Section 10 of this legislation mandated the establishment of Character Education programs in all school districts throughout the state, reading: “The regents shall insure that the course of instruction in grades K-12 includes a component on civility, citizenship and character education. The regents shall determine how to incorporate into the existing curricula the principals of honesty, tolerance, personal responsibility, respect for others, observance of laws and rules, courtesy, dignity and other positive traits.” Our school’s Character Education Committee is committed to work towards developing these positive character traits in our children. We do this not only to help prevent acts of violence in our school, but to instill in our children traits that will help them throughout their lives.
