Welcome back students! I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer. Now let's jump right in! My name is Mrs. McDermott , and this is my 7th year teaching English (6th year teaching at RHS). I'm a 2001 graduate of RHS and have lived in Taylor most of my life. I once sat where you did! In addition to teaching, I am the Drama Club advisor and Spring Play director. I also oversee the 9-12 aspect of the NEIU Reading Competition, help with Riverside Alive!, captain the faculty cheerleaders each November as we take on the Seniors, and show up every now and then in karaoke. I LOVE being involved!

My job as your Language Arts 9 teacher is to prepare you for high school learning through reading, writing, communication, and organization. This class will be a sampling of many English aspects like grammar, writing, poetry, literature, and Shakespeare. Although English may not be your favorite subject, I hope that you can gain a new appreciation for its importance, relevance, usefulness, and even excitement!

The purpose of this blog is to provide you with information from class. If you are absent, look to this blog for assignments, notes, and due dates. Use this resource!

If you have any questions about class, school in general, or anything else, please let me know. I'd love to help in anyway I can. I am available 10th period, 2nd period (planning), and 9th period (hall duty). You may even email me if that suits you better. Remember, I am here to improve your life as a student and a person.

Students went over last night's homework as a class. I checked it for completion. I also discussed the summer reading tests with students and determined who read what book. We then went through the book report options and my website. Finally, I discussed the jigsawing technique for parts of speech. This is group work that will be done on Monday and Tuesday. I also assigned homework. I don't have the exact page numbers but the first one is the practice on adjectives (I think page 319?). The second is adverbs: find the adverb and the word it modifies. The last one is prepositions. Let me know if you have questions! We'll go over the homework tomorrow.

Today, we went over last night's homework and I addressed concerns. Afterwards, we did a think pair share where I had students discuss their personal reading histories. They wrote it out first, then shared with their partner, then participated in group discussion. I then gave students learning goals and we discussed what goals we accomplished this class (I also went over metacognition in relationship to our RAISE grant). Finally, students created a summer reading word wall as a review for the summer reading test #1 on Monday.

Today, students took their second summer reading test. Afterwards, students in periods 1&3 finished jigsawing (getting notes). All other students worked on class norms. I also went over the Labels for Education program for extra credit. Students then had a chance to begin their homework. Page 334, p13.5A and B. Follow the directions.

Today, students went over the terms direct object, indirect object, predicate nominative, and predicate adjective. I'll provide notes below. I also provided students with information about binder checks at the end of the month.

Direct object -- noun or pronoun that receives the action. Must come after an action verb.

Ex. The captain rang the bell.

S- captain

V- rang (because there's a DO, it's a transitive verb)

DO- bell

Ex 2. The bell rang loudly.

S- bell

V- rang

no Direct Object

Indirect Object -- Receives the direct object, must come with a direct object.

Students reviewed for the verbals test on Friday. Look at this website for additional information: www.grammaruntied.com/verbals/verbals.html. Use the "practice" for a study review of the test.

Remember,

Infinitives = to+verb (to look, to feel, to retrieve, etc.)

Gerunds = act as nouns, ALWAYS end in ING, and can't be removed from a sentence (if you do, the sentence won't make sense).

Participles = act as adjectives, can end in ING, ED, or irregular conjugations. CAN be removed from sentence (and the sentence will still make sense).

Today is the first day of the second quarter! We will continue sentence combining, but first, I will remind students of some important information from class.

10 AR points per quarter
Binders/folders/notebook check will include: papers/notes from 1st and 2nd quarter, 12 SSR logs (dated and together), word wall with at least 10 words.
Extra credit Labels for Education still is in effect, except I am capping off extra points at 125 per person. You can still bring in grammar mistakes for the wall and AR extra credit
You can make up work for 1/2 credit
Abandoned book reports count for 1 AR point (up to 3 AR points)

Today, students worked in class on topic sentences and effective supporting details. We talked about some sample paragraphs from the book and pair shared. Students got new seats today and I collected the cans for AR points. Finally, students were handed back their shark creative writings and told to modify them the following ways:

1. Combine 2 pairs of sentences

2. Create a better detailed 1st paragraph

3. Add 4 new sentences OR make paragraphs

I'll collect both copies tomorrow.

Thursday and Friday, students worked on rough drafts. On Thursday, I showed students how to format the essay in Microsoft Word. Here are some things to remember:

12 point font
Times New Roman
Double Spacing
1 inch margins (they're set in Office 2007, so if you have that version, ignore this!)
Spacing after each paragraph should be set to 0pt (this option can be selected under paragraph on the home tab).
You should insert a header by clicking insert --> page number --> top of page --> plain number 3 ... then you type your last name before the number. Make sure to change that font to Times New Roman and 12 point also.
Close out of the header and at the top of the page write the following:

Your name

Teacher's name

Class title

Date

Title

Save it to your U: drive and make sure you change the title!

Wednesday, I introduced the students to their next writing project: persuasive writing.

For this, students will complete a two part project, a book review and a book trailer. I have a link to the book review material on this website under "Links" -- persuasive writing. Students can obtain all of the required information there.

The deadline for the outline is Monday, January 9th. Students will have time in class Thursday and Friday to find a book, read and take notes, and complete the outline on the computer.

Monday and Tuesday, I was out at a conference, so students just worked on their Photostories. Wednesday through Friday, students were finishing up their projects and I showed them how to upload videos to my website.

Thursday, students had to have all of their grades for the 2nd quarter in. 10 AR points, binders with SSR logs and word walls, and any makeup work.

Next week, my student teacher will be beginning to take over classes. She will be teaching my whole schedule (except 4th period). Any work that I list here should be similar to hers, but it may not be the same assignments.

Today, students did think alouds and talk to the texts. I modeled a think aloud, then students did the think aloud at the board. Afterwards, I gave students the poem "Siren Song" to talk to the text with. Homework: Unit 3 vocab sheet.

Students have been employing some RAISE grant strategies in the classroom. We have been doing think alouds and talking to the text. We are currently reading the story "Perseus" by Edith Hamilton and using post-its to talk to the text.

Tomorrow, Miss Mayoroski, my student teacher, takes over. She'll have all classes except 4th period. We'll both be focusing on mythology.

Students continued with introductions to the gods and goddesses. We watched a video on the Olympians before doing a sheet on the origin of words in Greek mythology.

Students went over the Greek mythology word origins sheet in class. Afterwards, we discussed some of the meanings. We ended class with going over the "Before you read" information and copying down the vocabulary. Finally, students must finish the Helpful v. Harmful character analysis for homework. Students will look at the list of characters and determine, based on the provided descriptions, which characters will help/harm Odysseyus.

Students began reading The Odyssey and highlighted, talked to the text, and did think alouds. We did a harmful v. helpful analysis of the characters. We also looked at the maps of the men's travels. Today and tomorrow, students are working on their Interlopers newsletters. We went over the format today, and we will continue working on this tomorrow too.

Students are having their introductions to Shakespeare before we begin Romeo and Juliet!

Students will work in partners (some solo) on sonnets. They'll be due Monday.

5/14-18, 21/12

Students are reading Romeo and Juliet. By Friday, all classes finished Act I.

Monday, all students finished Act II. Students should be completing/have completed Acts I and II packets.
