7th and 8th Grade Social Studies Mr. Collin Flynn: 7th and 8th Grade Social Studies (CFlynn@cfsd16.org)
Making History Come Alive

7th Grade Social Studies - Civil War through WWII.  A sequential exploration of United States history from the post-Civil War Reconstruction era through World War II. Students begin the year with a unit on United States Government as an introduction to the principles and process that have shaped the United States since its conception. As students progress through the history of the United States, they will investigate how cultural, geographic, and economic influences over time have led to a shift in the country’s position on a worldwide scale.  Also integrated into this class are activities and tasks that encourage students to develop strong research skills, along with critical thinking and analysis skills. Throughout the year students will utilize technology, engage in research and investigation, make connections between the content and current events, and participate in collaborative projects and discussions that help them grow as individuals and responsible citizens.  The following units are covered: United States Government, Civil War review, Reconstruction, Westward Expansion, American Imperialism, Industrialization, World War I, The Roaring Twenties, The Great Depression, and World II.

8th Grade Social Studies - Personal Finance and Post-WWII U.S. History. We will start the course by learning how to handle money. This may sound like common sense, but many young people spend little time thinking about how to make money, grow it, spend it and reach short/long-term financial goals. This information can be life changing if you apply what you learn. Then, we will move on to post-WWII U.S. history. This is a 70-year period that has been highlighted by conflict, change and justice. We begin by reviewing different political and economic systems and US/world geography.  With that background we can analyze the Cold War (first use of the atomic bomb, space race, arms race, Korean War, and Vietnam War), the search for equal treatment (Civil Rights Movement, women’s rights, etc), current challenges (energy consumption/sources and immigration), and current conflicts (Middle East, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, and terrorism).  We will frequently use current events to analyze complex issues in a historical context.  Finally, we will use our study of history and current events to improve our literacy, 21st Century, and technology skills.  This is an exciting time in American history filled with complex challenges and rewarding opportunities.
