Summer Assignments for AP Art History and AP 2-D Design:

Summer Assignment for AP Art History:  You must purchase the book The Annotated Mona Lisa by Carol Strickland, which is a short overview of the history of art.  It is highly readable and somewhat entertaining.  It would be preferable that you read the entire book, but for the first week of class you will have HAD to of read pages 1-65.  (We will be covering Ancient Art-Middle Ages very quickly during the first six weeks of the school year.)

You must also visit an art museum - Dallas Museum of Art, Meadows Museum of Art, Crow Collection of Asian Art, Kimbell (Fort Worth), Modern (Fort Worth), Amon Carter (Fort Worth)...or any major museum in the U.S. or abroad.

Please take notes on two works of art - one that you really enjoy and one that you really do not care for.  Summarize the two works in a written format (typed).  Describe the work, in terms of what you see.  Discuss the reasons that you are either attracted or dis-attracted by the works.

I would think that you should be able to write at least 200 words on each.

Chambliss – Summer Assignment 2-D Design

Develop a Composition that Shows Progressive Magnification of a Subject:  Select either an organic or inorganic object to draw.  Divide a large piece of drawing paper ( 18 x 24) into nine equal sections.  Starting in the top-left box, draw a representational, overall view of the object as
accurately as you can.  In the next box to the right, imagine that you have a camera with a zoom lens and draw a close-up portion of the object in accurate detail.  In the remaining sections, continue zooming in on the object and enlarging finer details.  The last frame should be an enlarged detail created with the aid of a magnifying glass or microscope.  (From Art Synectics)

Divide a page, canvas, board – i.e. the working surface – into three equal inset spaces (minimum size 16 x 20).  Do three views of a landscape – drawing or painting.  Limit yourself to a specific color scheme (analogous, complementary, tertiary).

Do a drawing or painting of a futuristic cityscape – i.e. Dallas in the year 2050 (keep
in mind rules of one-, two-, and three-point perspective. (Minimum 16 x 20)

Do a cut paper (colored construction papers) design of the interior of your room with yourself included.  Start with a newsprint contour drawing to use as a pattern to cut your shapes from the paper. (Minimum 18 x 24; minimum 4 colors)
