The EGR Legislative Committee will be hosting an Education Town Hall Meeting on Monday, April 24th at the EGR High School Little Auditorium from 5:30 pm - 7 pm. Several state legislators will be there to discuss education issues and answer your questions.  We will also be highlighting the importance of the proposed Enhancement Millage -- voting on the May 2 ballot -- which would provide an additional $211 per student in operational funding for the next 10 years.

The EGR Legislative Committee keeps parents informed about important developments in Lansing that directly impact our kids in school. All are invited to attend the Legislative Committee's monthly meetings. The next meeting is this Wednesday, April 12  at 8:30 AM at Woodcliff. If you would like to stay informed and advocate for our kids’ education, please join our FB group and sign up for email and text updates: https://www.facebook.com/groups/136269413096358/.  If you have any difficulty signing up, please contact Lucy Shair at ljshair@gmail.com.

Weekly Note from Dr. Cannon:

April 17, 2017

Dear Breton Downs Families,

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful, spring weather this past weekend.  At Breton Downs it is so nice to see spring blooming in our front flowers pots (please see picture below).  A big thank you to Shelly Fuller for the time and effort she puts into our flowers.  They are a nice reminder that summer is right around the corner.

On Friday, May 5, 2017 we are having a Haitian Day at Breton Downs Elementary.  We are trying to emulate, as much as possible, a typical school day in Haiti. On May 5, we are asking our students to walk to school and to wear a yellow shirt and dark shorts/pants. This will be their school uniform. Students and staff will work throughout the day with limited electricity and technology.  Our students will be given the same supplies students use at the Power of Education Foundation School: pencil, paper, and share a small whiteboard.

At lunchtime students will have the option of purchasing a Haitian lunch that will include rice, beans, and fruit.  Recess will look different as well. Our students have access to soccer balls, jump ropes, and basketballs. This is the common recess equipment used in Haiti. We had a Haiti Day last year and it was a big success with our students and staff.  We are looking forward to May 5!

One of our most important tasks is preparing the class lists for next year.  I will meet with staff in May to begin student placements for the 2017-2018 school year.  To guide us in this important process, we will follow the East Grand Rapids Board of Education Policy #8040:

Students are assigned to specific classes, grade levels and teachers by the building Principal.  In making assignments, Principals may consider (with input from teachers and parents) the following factors:  (i) individual student needs; (ii) learning styles of students; (iii) teaching styles; (iv) students ratio; (v) heterogeneous make-up of the class; (vi) class size; and (vii) special education needs.

I am interested in your input.  If you wish to contribute information about your child, please use the Student Placement Information Form that is attached here.  Please do not request a specific teacher as many factors go into the placement decision and we have yearly changes in teaching assignments.

Return this information to my office no later than Friday, May 5, 2017.  Please note that all information received will remain strictly confidential.  I look forward to your input.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Cannon
