Work Experience for Daily Living Work Experience for Daily Living

I am also the Work Experience Coordinator for the Special Education Department at Benton Community. I am in charge of helping special education students learn the skills needed to find a job and keep a job.

Some students may already have a job outside of the school, and they can earn school credit through this program, if they bring me in their paycheck stub, have good attendance at work, and keep good communication with me.

Other students who may not have a job, I will assist them with that process. We start by figuring out their interests. Once we do that, we can do job shadows, which allow the student to see what the job is about and to see if they are interested in that. Through that process we also work on filling out job applications, practicing for an interview, and any other needed skills before getting a job.

The student's junior year, is when the student begins to go out on the job and get work experience/hands on experience. All students really seem to enjoy this, as it gives them an opportunity to explore a variety of jobs and to get a sense of what they would like to do after high school.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions regarding the Work Experience Program.

Course: Students will be placed out in the school or community on job sites. They will be supervised and evaluated on their work ethic. Students are able to explore jobs of interest or even jobs they may not have considered. Students will be supervised by the employer and Work Experience Coordinator.

v     Exploration- Students will have the opportunity to explore different occupations and think of occupations that might be of interest to them. Students are allowed to go on job shadows to see different jobs. Students are encouraged to be creative.

v     Daily Notebooks- Students will write in notebooks daily about their job and how things are going. This gives the students the opportunity to give me feedback and if they like or dislike the job.

v     Interview- Students will have the opportunity to do an interview either with the Work Experience Coordinator or the employer.

v     On Time- Students are expected to be on time to their jobs. Transportation is provided for students, if needed.

v     Progress- The Work Experience Coordinator will check up on student’s to see how they are doing and make sure everything is going ok.

v     Midterm- Students will be graded at midterm, by the supervisor, who will be using the evaluation provided by the Work Experience Coordinator.

v     Final Evaluation- The direct supervisor will be given an evaluation to be filled out at the end of the term. This allows the student and teacher to see progress and to see areas that need to be worked on.

v     Transportation-Students will be provided with transportation to get to and from their job.

v     Work Experience Coordinator (WEC)- The WEC is responsible for checking on the students and providing the employer with essential information and evaluations. The WEC is Brooke Kupka.
