Welcome to Music Class!

The Music Program at Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School includes general music classes for all students in grades Pre-K through grade 8, a junior chorus for students in grade 4-5, and a senior chorus for students grades 6-8. It is truly a pleasure to be teaching music here at Immaculate Conception Catholic Regional School for my second year.

In addition to teaching music, I will be working with many classes to present "mini" musical theater productions throughout the year.   The Middle School students will present a major musical play sometime in the Spring.  Watch your calendar for dates.   Check out the photos in the "my slide show" section for photos from some of last year's productions.

Music has always been a very important part of my life.  I actually began taking piano lessons as a child when I was in the second grade and continued from that point on!  I hold a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Rhode Island.   Prior to teaching here, I was a music/chorus teacher at Deering Middle School (6-8) in West Warwick for 20 years and was also the Music Program Coordinator for the entire district (K-12).  I also taught grades K-6 in the town of Westerly for 10 years prior to teaching in West Warwick.  .

Music is so much a part of the fabric of our society.  It has a power unique in our culture that connects us to our history, traditions, and heritage.  Music helps students think and integrate learning across traditional disciplinary lines.  Music education bolsters academic achievement.  Skills learned through the discipline of music, transfer to study skills, communication skills and cognitive skills useful in every part of the curriculum.  Music education also forges the vital link between independent/group effort and quality of result…”practice makes perfect.”

As stated in the philosophy of the music curriculum, “Through music experiences at Immaculate Conception School, students will grow emotionally and intellectually, realizing that music has properties to help enrich their lives, reward their senses and sharpen their minds!  I believe that learning music in school contributes to student achievement and will encourage, promote and develop a sense of accomplishment and confidence for all students.

I am looking forward to another wonderful year with all of the talented students at Immaculate Conception Catholic School.  Welcome to Music!!!  Let us make a joyful sound!!!                                       __Mrs. Beverly F. Hopkins
