In first grade it is very important that our students practice the skills we have learned in school at home. This is a chance for you to see what your child is learning and how we are teaching each area. Homework in first grade will be given Monday-Thursday starting the first full week of school.
Homework should be turned in each day into the homework tray near my desk. When homework is turned in incomplete or not turned in your child will be able to finish this during snack time. However, with excessive incomplete homework assignments your child will have to finish the homework assignment during recess with me. Snack and recess are important times for your child to socialize and use their energy. The more often they turn their homework in completed the more they will enjoy first grade.
BIWEEKLY HOME JOURNALS
Every other week your child will come home with a journal which includes a book to read Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thursday nights with your child. (Try having them read it to you). There should be a journal entry telling about the book you read. An example will go home with the first journal entry. Things to write in the journal include: title, author, a sentence telling the main idea, a summary about the story, a favorite part of the story, or tell something you learned if it is a nonfiction book. Encourage your child to write the sentences and draw a picture to go with the sentence he/she wrote.
