Welcome to Ms. Deyoe's First Grade WebPage! April Showers Bring May Flowers In Math we are talking about adding and subtracting with two digit numbers. We will have a great focus on our place values and understanding of tens and ones. It is important to keep practicing Math facts at home to improve in developing these skills. Recently, Ms. Deyoe began teaching in a different method. She teaches us a brief skill, we mirror the hand motions to go with it, and then we each teach a partner before we do the work. We love it and when we do it right the class gets a smilie face. Loud cheers happen with smilie faces. Check out wholebrainteaching.com it is a great site to see the changes we're working on in our classroom to engage us more. In Reading and Writing we're focusing on the elements of a story as well as long vowel patterns. It is important to refer to reading and writing together as how a student breaks down a word to read will help them write what they hear later. We are still working on the use of capital letters and punctuation in our sentences. As our class loves to write, we'll be looking to be sure to not use run-on sentences. Our skill focus will be verbs in present and past tense, contractions, compound words, and synonyms and antonyms. In Reading we'll talk about character traits, the theme of a story, the plot, setting, main idea, and sequencing the events in a story. In Religion we are talking about the Holy Spirit. We have learned the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and now we will discuss how they help us to pray as we prepare for our May mass on Ascension Thursday. April Birthdays- Sydney, April 2nd and Aidan April 7th Please remember that LIBRARY is on TUESDAYS and your child should bring his/her library book with them on Tuesdays. Also, be sure to read our newsletters for important information about classroom activities coming up and review topics with your children at home. Love, Ms. Deyoe
