Class of 2012 - This year's Cyber Challenge is being held in the fall instead of the spring. I am happy to announce that we have 5 students competing this year (including 2 females, which was strongly encouraged by Congressman Jim Langevin).  More news to come.

Class of 2011 - Jeffery Tipton, a junior during the 2010-2011 school entered into the nationwide Cyber Challenge sponsored  by Congressman James Langevin and coordinated through the New England Institute of Technology (NEIT).  Rhode Island had the most schools enter the challenge from schools across the country.

The congressman gave the audience a very informative speech about how cyber terrorism is the next threat to businesses, the government, and the infrastructure of the nation.  While there many who received recognition for entering the challenge, Jeff Tipton was named High School Champion along with others in the same category.  Jeff worked very hard on the challenge, studying from as many materials he could, (including materials provided to him).

I am very proud of Jeff and his accomplishment. He received a letter from Congressman Langevin, and a lucite trophy.  He was given a monetary award from me for finishing the contest in one of the highest categories.

Class of 2010 - The traditional classes in Computer Literacy (or Computer Applications) are proceeding according to schedule.  The four main core application that we focus on are Microsoft Office 2007 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access Database as they integrate and support the core subject disciplines.  For example, while learning each of the applications, students get an opportunity to reinforce the core discipline skills with each of the computer applications.  Word reinforces English Language Arts, Excel reinforced Math, PowerPoint reinforces Oral Communications and Presentation Skills, and Access Database focuses on Information Technology Skills.

The Microsoft Computer Application Specialist and Computer Tech & Independent Technology courses focus on the preparing students for advanced skills needed beyond high school and to expose students to other areas of computer technologies that are not taught in traditional computer application courses.

The computer tech class is always looking for computers to repair.  They offer very low diagnostic fees and extremely reasonable repair rates to anyone who has a computer problem.  In comparison to the big box stores, we charge a $10 diagnostic fee and a low hourly flat rate.  Any parts and or special software are well detailed for our customers to purchase and they after they are purchased, we install the materials.

Students learn the complete business cycle of marketing, promotion, product, pricing, and working with the accounting students to reconcile the revenue generated from this exciting class.

February 2011 Statewide Cyber Challenge.  A unique opportunity for students to demonstrate their technology skills in multiple areas of technology.  The challenge is being sponsored by Congressman James Langevin, New England Institute of Technology, and the Rhode Island Department of Education, RI Science & Technology Advisory Council, and Tech Collective.  Scroll down to see the PDF file for a brief description of the Cyber Challenge.
