What is a Secondary School Pastoral Plan?

Pastoral Planning begins by inviting each principal to form a Pastoral Planning Team, a group of teachers, who, with the chaplain and local parish Pastor, gather the consultation of the wider school community and create a plan of action based on the essential mission of the school and the mission of Catholic Education.

Pastoral Planning involves a large consultation of all staff/ support staff members and a deep reflection on the core values of the school community.  The schools are invited to:

  • Look at the school in light of the Gospel Mission
  • Facilitate a broad consultation process with all staff members of the school
  • Assess the strengths and resources of the school
  • Assess the limitations and needs of the school
  • Examine the local neighborhood in which the school exists
  • Articulate a mission statement for the school
  • Create priorities and goals for the next 3-5 years
  • Create Action Steps Objectives to achieve the goals
  • Call forth leaders from among the school community to bring the plan to reality

What is a Pastoral Planning Team?

The Pastoral Planning Team is a leadership body within the school whose role is to develop and implement a mission-focused pastoral plan for the school.  As servants to the wider community, the Pastoral Planning Team provides staff/ support staff members with forums for consultation and reflection on the mission of the Church.

Pastoral Planning Team develops pastoral plans, based on the insight of the community, to enable the faith community to continue to live out the mission of the Gospel.

Pastoral Planning Team calls forth leaders from the school to implement and achieve the goals of the pastoral plan.

What do Pastoral Planning Teams do?

Pastoral Planning Teams are given the task of creating and implementing a pastoral plan in the life of the school.   Pastoral planning begins with a school-wide dialogue on the mission of the Church, the perceptions of the community, and the current reality of the school.  This dialogue is facilitated by the Principal of the school.

The Principal, through the created pastoral plan articulates the goals and priorities of the school community for the coming years.  The Pastoral Planning Team also calls forth individuals from the community to implement the goals of the pastoral plan.  In this way, the members of the Pastoral Planning Team are also given the task of developing other school leaders to carry out the overall mission of the school community and the Church.
