We will be sending home weekly homework assignments every Monday and will periodically be sending home links from Little Treasures and Everyday Math. Here are some things you can also try.

~Encourage your child to write his/her name and help him/her identify the letters.  Remember when writing to start all letters at the top.

~Read to your child and ask questions about what you've read.

~Have your child help you with chores, turning it into a matching/sorting activity. Ask him/her to match socks, or sort clothes by color.  Have him/her help with the dishes and sort the cutlery into knives, forks, and spoons.

~Give your child toys to play with in the tub and estimate which ones will sink and which ones will float.

~Cook together!  Have your child help with measuring, counting and mixing ingredients.

~Have your child help put away the groceries, asking him/her to count items as he/she puts things away. Then ask him/her questions like "How many boxes of cereal did I buy?".

~Make play dough together. Try this recipe and have your child help with making it.

Play Dough
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup hot water
A few drops of food coloring

In a non-stick pan, mix the dry ingredients.  Slowly add the water and mix.  Add food coloring.  Mix.  Cook over medium heat for about 3 minutes until it is in a clump; stirring constantly.  Place on wax paper, the counter, or cutting board.  Knead for a couple of minutes (let it cool if it needs to).  Store in covered container or a sealable plastic bag in the refrigerator.

~Give your child a magnifying glass and go on a bug hunt. Ask him/her to describe what he/she sees.

~Have your child draw a picture and tell you what it is. Write/label what he/she says and read it back to him/her.
